I feel I want to add on to this. Is anyone else not buying that locke is the smoke monster? like the smoke monster is something else?

Illiana (i think) said this locke guy was trapper for years, but Smokie was roaming the island while whatever locke is was trapped in the cabin.

I don't care what the pop video of lost says. I just don't think it is smokie. Anyone else?

yea i get that, but i think what is using locke is not smokie. i think smokie is something else. either that or the ring of ash around the cabin prevented smokie from taking a human form anywhere outside of the cabin. just something isn't adding up there.

In a recent episode they theorized it was ( the ring around the cabin ) to keep Smokie out.
Your theory is just as valid as any other ...

I'll qualify my response with the "who really knows what is going on" sentiment

Having said that - I haven't seen anything that would make me think that smokie and smocke (smokie + locke) aren't the same 'thing' just in different forms. What really seemed to lay this out was two episodes ago (the sawyer/cave episode). The smoke monster was poking around the old Dahrma buildings (filmed from a first person perspective - you could see its reflection in the window) and then it turned and went to the machete....the crazy "hey I am taking human form" special effects play and there is smocke picking up the machete.

The same "hey I am taking human form" special effects played when sayid met up with smocke in the forrest in the latest episode.

Of course ANYTHING is possible. But I think smoke/locke/MiB and possibly christian are all the same 'thing'.

erock, we saw through the eyes of smokie going through the jungle and then stopping at the knife, then in the image form of Locke and pick it up.

What's not adding up, I think, is that the island has rules and all the folks follow those rules. I struggle with that too...

what's not adding up is this. so while there was a ring of ash around the cabin in i think season 4, Ben called smokie and it attacked the special forces people. how could smokie be around then, if what is now locke, was trapped in the cabin hence not smokie.
