I love the playoffs, yesterday I got into a heated discussion about how nhl has the best/most intense playoff season, and everyone around me laughed

I dunno if it was for the comment or because I am canadaian haha

The playoffs are what make the too long season worthwhile;their was good energy in last nights game.
It could have gone either way.
I'm just glad that after going with the WORST record in the League last year ,we have turned it around.
Whatever happens is gravy.
The longer the series the better it will be for Philly.

Well that was pretty wild. Rangers-Pens that is. Now before I whine and complain let me say that if the rangers keep making bone head plays and committing turnovers this series won't last long. Misplay by Rozsival by the blue line turns into the goal that banks in off of him, Ruutu's goal - Tyutin might as well have been on the bench while Sykora was scoring on the 2 on 0, er I mean 2 on 1. Geez, you gotta take either the pass or the player and he did neither, like a deer caught in headlights as the puck slipped right by him on it's way to Sykora for the slam dunk.

And then the Oswald single shooter Hossa grassy knoll goal. From a bad angle the puck goes THROUGH the plastic portion of Gomez' skate blade (a space barely big enough for the puck to fit through!) and comes to Lundqvist just as he seems to start to stand up as he lifts his left pad up from the butterfly position and off the ice, just in time for the puck to go under his leg and in, then he gets the pad back down - as if it were a door of some type going up and down with just enough time for something to get in. That one was freaky but Lunqvist (who other than that play was stellar) had no reason to change position and shoulda had it.

Now I'll complain. The Straka call was close - coulda gone either way but Straka had no business even giving the Ref a chance to make the call. He and Crosby were the 2nd pair of players chasing down the puck on the play. Unnecessary. More to the point, earlier Gomez was taken down in front of the net as the puck was sailing by and no call. That too was borderline but no less so than the deciding penalty by Straka. Gomez also had his skates totally taken out from under him behind the Pens net right after a Pens penalty had expired right in front of the ref, who was watching from 6 feet away - no call. That one was horrendous.

Now as for the deciding goal. I always hated this rule because the idea that the only way a goal that goes in off a body part (other than being batted in with ones hand) can be waved off is if a 'distinct kicking motion' can be discerned, totally leaves the door open for other intentional acts that direct the puck in. Malkin clearly watched the puck coming toward him and moved his leg up and directed the puck in with it. Didn't even look like he tried to get it with his stick. Shouldn't have been a goal. Bad rule. I know the reason is that the NHL doesn't want refs trying to get into the head of a player to discern intent but you don't have to do that. Just watch where he's looking and what he does. If you can reasonably say he saw the puck coming at him and made a move that directed the puck in: no goal.

OK - got all that off my chest. Sunday should be just as insane.

does anybody else find it extremely annoying when these damned versus announcers incorporate football/baseball/basketball references into their calling of a hockey game? last night seemed unusually ridiculous for some reason.

would it be that hard for versus to get commentators that actually know the game of hockey?

Billbill, I agree with you somewhat on the "directing" rule, but he, technically, didnt try and "kick" it in, or use his skate.

that was a crazy game though, made work go by a lot faster.

No doubt - as the rule reads it was the right call. I'm actually more ticked at the Rangers screw ups than the officiating, though that might've been hard to discern from my rant!

I agree. They were also saying some stupid stuff about the game that had me scratching my head. While the production values of vs were dreadful in the beginning of their nhl broadcasts, and have improved, they still don't show enough replays. They'll cram in as many commercials as they can and do those dopey ice side interviews that are completely worthless. Meanwhile I want to see some freakin replays!

There was an interference call against Backman for the rangers and I wanted to see a replay and hear some analysis. I do have a dvr so I went back a few times but couldn't see anything close to interference. Is it too much to ask to have a different angle and some freakin analysis of a penalty that may result in a goal against? They didn't say a word about it. Sheesh! Too often these guys seem like lapdogs for the nhl and real reluctant to be critical.

I do like Eddie Olchek (sp?). He's really on top of the game and has some great insights and calls it like he see's it.

Yeah, Edzo is good. Though Mike Emrick always seems to make every single play sound like the most amazing thing that has ever happened.

I agree with you on the lack of replays. It's a damn shame Versus coverage is what it is. Unfortunately, I don't see it making any improvements in the near future. There are so many people out there that know that game of hockey and would be able to talk about it without tossing in references to other sports.

Off the top of my head, what I remember from last night:

"Dribbles it back into the paint"
"In the end zone"
"Home run"
"Moving pick"
"Defensive quarterback"

The list just goes on. It's pathetic.

Aside from the shots going in off skates, a couple of penalties for breathing next to sid the kid, and a few gaffs in the defensive zone, the rangers out played the pens. You gotta like there chances in this series if the refs don't hand it to the pens with a bow on top. The only time I see the rangers making stupid mistakes on D all year is when they get a big lead. The interference call for the game winner was joke. Straka was even with Crosby and was only called for interference because it was Crosby. Kind of like playing against Larry Bird in the Garden back in the day. Go blue

Well, I'm gonna disagree with almost all of what you said. First off, I don't think Crosby is getting preferential treatment at all. I mean, Avery smacked him in the face early in the game when he was on the ice, nothing called. Pens outplayed the Rangers in the first 10 minutes, got outplayed in the following 20, then turned it up. Seriously though, you think the Rangers will win ONLY if the refs fuck up in the Pens favor? Now that's just ridiculous. Both are good teams and it will be a hard fought series. You can only blame losing on poor reffing to a certain extent
