Not only would I skip to Tons (if I did skip through shows while listening to them), but my band also plays the song.

My vote was for Brent and his contribution to the Dead!

Keith and Donna did far better with Jerry in his solo stuff than they ever did when the were with the boys.

If you hate the caterwauling and need a reason to forgive her... grab some '78 JGB, it'll soothe your stinging ears.

I skip through 1979-1995. Let alone "Tons of Steel".

let us not forget that the last year and a half of Kieth's tenure that by the end of any given show he was just a pounding out these really big and heavy block chords on the old piana and it was hard to hear anything else let alone Bobby W.

I agree. Donna has done some great singing in her career, even some with the GD on the studio stuff. But for whatever reason, she just never worked with the band on live shows. She did seem to be working on her really weak spots toward the end of her tenure, at least she wasn't doing that scream/shriek thing as much, except for PITB. Even though I try not to bash her too much, the reality is that when it comes to me paying money for GD music (like buying Dick's Picks and the like), I generally steer clear of the Donna era. Since they were a package deal, that also means I generally steer clear of the Keith era too. I like DP 20 though, Donna doesn't sing much on there, but Keith was sounding good. I love his playing on Sugaree on that one.

+1; long story short, Keith (not "Kieth"... while I'm at it "Parish" has only one "r" and "Kimock" one "m" ) may have had higher highs (partially because of the peak the band as a whole was experiencing in the early 70's) but also had lower lows (with a smattering of notable exceptions in Brent's case like his wasted tantrum on 4/21/86, or the Hey Jude wreckage on 3/22/90)

I think Jerry had a better musical interaction/camaraderie with Brent....

brent all the way that hammond gave the dead such an awsome tone. Vince sounded like he was playing a kids keyboard with cheesy synth effects.

Garcia was quoted many times saying they wanted to get away from the percussion player that was KG and bring in someone with more harmonic sensibilities. That was Brent in spades.

OT, but... I've also often wondered what effect the keyboard slot had on the development of Bobby's ultra-shrill (in a nice way ) tone or how that whole thing developed... was it as a case of Bob being lost in the mix with Brent and having to forge some new niche for himself or was it a case of Brent having to carry more of the full-spectrum harmonic aspects while Bobstar did his thing? I'm inclined towards the latter, as Bob has continued with the ice-picks to the ears thing even when he's totally running the show in Ratdog.
