This is a way cool idea.
Gonna be tough on the later acts to not repeat tunes, though.

I would love to get down on some Dead jams, but I also wanna play my originals with my band, and hear some other's originals.

A very fun concert I went to was a Leftover Salmon/String Cheese Incident Show where there was no intermission. As leftover finished, String Cheese Started replacing Leftover Salmon band members one by one. It took a few songs to get through, but eventually they completely replaced each other. At the end of the show the did a big jam together.
That may be a fun exercise for this concept.
I also think it would be interesting to do some stuff like bluegrass festivals, where there are breakout sessions, or people mix it up and form little groups.
Also, as was pointed out yesterday, who's going to bring the chicks?

So...any word about making this little idea, a reality yet?

One thing that needs to happen once this is organized is obtaining permits! any event that has live music has to have permits. so it needs location needs to be decided on and someone needs to get the permits

okay, getting the ball in motion.
Really
my mother is a principle in the Buffalo public schools. she has already been talking to me about throwing some kind of event/fundraiser to get her things for her school (it's in a poor section of town and we're often called upon to donate jackets and such to kid durring the winter) with her connections she has the ability to get permits and such with out the high cost as it is helpful to the state. I can bounce the idea off of her (it's the same type of event she wants to throw, only on a bigger weekend long type scale) If I can get the support of the BPS they'll probably take care of the initial funding, we would organize and run said event and then the proceeds go to the Buffalo Public Schools. if everybody cool with that idea, I could make a few phone calls and see what I come up with.
P.S> my band Freak Freely are imrpov artist, we would be more than willing to host a giant free jam and let anybody without a band sit in

Spilly, your mom is really a principle at a buffalo public school. Thats fucking weird, mine is too.
Anyhow, lets narrow all these suggestions down to three possibilities and vote on them.

Really, as great as this all is sounding....and as excited as I was yesterday (and still am a bit, mind you) about the prospect of this happening....
Who would come as an AUDIENCE? I mean, I guess what I'm saying is...none of us here are HUGE, right? I mean we probably all have a decent, loyal, local following, but to take it on the road? Don't get me wrong - I'm always in for a great jam session.
ALSO, someone would have to be "the head" of the whole thing, as there MAY be some folks on here (no offense intended to anyone and I'm certainly not saying I'm a great player by any means) who say they can play, but they may not really be able to...y'know? So, everyone would have to send in some sort of "demo", I think, to that main person. I could be wrong - everyone here may rock!!! I hope they do!!
Anyway, just playing a little devil's advocate.
Also, paying for the venue in advance...ticket sales....lodging for bands....there's really a lot to consider.
I'm just sayin'...

Dude
I'm huge.Really.
I was thinking your backyard would be cool.
Do you have a pool ?
Can I play Lydia ?
You make some good points. To build on them
One band could be the Back line the whole night ( We all play git box right ?).
At the start various peps could get up and do tunes ( Open Mike Like).
Certain songs would be reserved for the pros at the end of the night.
I mean it would be cool if say there was some non jamming stuff going on like camping or paintball to round out the weekend.Hang and party ? Frisbee golf ?Maybe clinics ? BillbBill on the road !
we might be playing for ourselves but how easy would it be to craigslist the thing to find local heads to be the crowd.
Yeah I'm a dreamer.
The only way I could do this is its close enough to drive to.Pittsburgh is about the range I can make with all the gear and booze.
If it was yearly, the band that hosts could get the much coveted "reserved" tunes.

Jedi,
I'm all about it, seriously. I'd do it - especially if it were here in Pittsburgh. As far as backlining all night, well, you'd probably get quite a few BANDS that show, so everyone could play...again, have all "solo" artists get the chance, if they want to, sit in with a band. Each band could be allotted a few "solo" artists, depending on the # of bands and the # of "solo" artists.
We do a lot of non-GD stuff, too....
As far as paintball, etc...goes...well, y'all can have fun with that - I just wanna jam & hang w/ some cool cats.

Ok- so i think it is a little early to be deciding wh can play what tunes. Actually, why can't there be repeats-different versions could be fun. Also, if we could some how fanaggle a weekend out of some land one of our buddies owns we could do it for free. There is a band in buffalo, well from fredonia or ferdonia, however that godforsaken town is spelled called On the Sly. They have a festival at a farm called Slyfest. We might just be able to rent it for ourselves and invite our friends, and make it free. There would be hopefully like 50 of us with some friends and such, maybe another 30 or 40. We could make it free/donation toward weekend land rental, and it would be on private land, thus eliminating the need for permits. I think this should be more gear towards a good time for all of us and our friends, rather than organizing am actual festival open to the general public. I mean honestly we could probably throw ourselves a kickass weekend party for easily under a grand, we just need to slow down and rationally think about this for ten minutes.

Hey its all about the sickleberry !
The thing about picking a band - like thecause - is maybe they gots the ways and means. The connections and the ear to the street. To help pull it off.
I remember one of you guys saying there was a 2 bar fest or something you guys were playin'.Maybe you set something up.Or know some way we fit into some local angle.
The form could change to fit the actual needs though.
It would be cool.
By the 10th year we could sell out and have MegaDeath play the fest.

So far, I like Candyman's idea the best. Just have it for us and if others show, then cool. If not, cool, as well.
Private venue may be best....free is good.
Flyers suck.

what if instead of an open-jam thing, we have a section of the event, or a seperate stage for that kinda thing, and then a regular stage for BANDS that people that want to go watch can watch.
Like for the Jamming Stage, it can kinda be like a revolving jam with a lot of people coming in/going out and such, or instead of a different stage we could do it for a certain time slot like noon - three or something like that. Plus, im sure there will be all sorts of jamming going on in the camp area.
Then a Band Stage, where actual bands can go play their own originals or covers. With the covers, we gotta be careful that ten bands arent playing scarlet begonias in a row, so maybe have a drawing for certain "repeditive" songs and have someone review setlists or something.
As for the not jamming part, im seeing a lot of frisbee playing, hacky-sack, vending, and hopefully an instruction tent where someone with a lot of knowledge can help some other folks with their playing. how long are we trying to do this for? a couple days, or a one day, or what?
the farm is still open, but i got the musshhhies already haha.

If we held it in Antarctica we could club baby penguins too.
Little yellow bastards.
