If you matrix the recordings on the spot, 25-30 feet is the sweet spot... that's about 3ms of delay between the SBD and the AUD... If you record the two sources seperately, the latency between the SBD and AUD anywhere from 0 to 5ms is good, more than that and it becomes very apparent (and annoying).

Never thought of that ...
I thought all it took to make the Matrix's was a way to sync the two sources and a whole lotta free time on your hands ?

The board feed travels at the speed light... the aud travels at the speed of sound. That difference is the latency in the matrix.

120 feet from the stage is about 10ms of delay... so the board feed would be 10ms in front of the aud, since the signal travels from the stage to the board, arrives at the board and gets routed out the mains, travels through the air AND THEN gets recorded. All the latency occurs between the mains and the AUD recording mics.

Most matrix recording you hear are zero latency matrix... add a little latency and the recording will have more depth to it.

Especially if you use binaural mics to record... The ears of the head are 2 AT 841's running thru a Sound Professionals line driver:
