There was an interview with Jerry that was one of the ones posted on the interview thread that Shakedown started which asked him about drug use in the band.

This is taking place in the early 70's and Jerry was asked if he the whole band still takes acid. He said that Bob no longer uses it but some of them still take acid but in much smaller amounts. Not to get stoned out of their gourds but to enhance perception and still be able to function.

It really is too bad about the heroin use... I had a friend who became an addict and dropped out of high school and I would not call his lifestyle at that point necessarily "functional". It was all to support the habit and the habit was not enhancing his life in any shape or form. Not being on the drugs was miserable and being on them was the only escape from the withdrawl. Overall, a pretty bleak picture if you ask me. I would not say that heroin helped any of the bandmembers with their playing, it is just too bad that it became part of the lifestyle and thereby became seemingly necessary.

Did Jerry ever use horse or coke intravenously? He must have tried at some point right?

I believe he said that bob didn't take it willingly or knowingly. The rest of the band would still dose him every once in a while

That is one fantastic show. I'm even of the unpopular opinion that the China>Rider trumps that of 6/26/74.

Well apparently it is so good that the board was pulled off of the archive in a matter of a couple of months since I last listened. Oh well, just went to sugarmegs.org to get my fix of 11-14-1973.

6-28 is notable mostly for intro jam and not for the transition. The segue on the 11-14-1973 is one of the finest I have heard. Sweet Bob solo and Jerry comps perfectly and then comes in so smoothly with his lead. Feelin' Groovy jam is sweet, no faultering on this one! I have to agree with you on the trumpage, TS.

I read in Phil's book that they dosed on every saturday for most of the heavily psychedelic years (67-69?) and then went and listened to those saturday sets. For the most part they were much more inspired than other nights and the setlists were a bit more interesting. Were they tripping when they recorded Live/Dead?

I'm totally pulling this one out of my rear end, but I always got the impression that Mickey stayed away from the hard drugs but used psychedelics on a pretty regular basis. Just going on a gut feeling here, anyone else confirm?

That's a nice impression to have of someone, but... hell, why take Rock Scully's word for it- why not read Mickey's autobiography?

I think you mean the C>R from 6/26 (there is none on 6/28 and the 6/30 instance pales in comparison), which has a MONSTER transition. In fact the entire C and R are stupendous, EXCEPT imho for the mushy little intro jam which I find completely unnoteworthy. Go back and listen from the transition to the end of Rider and hear bloody musical miracles happening nearly continuously; the music playing the band. One of the lead breaks in Rider has JG reeling off these SICK augmented licks that coalesce into... liquid diamonds! Wish I could locate my 11/14/73 to compare right now, but its awol... I have no choice but to retract... what a ride!

thats true, I know some folk that cant even rip the bowl once and be able to play. I also know people that have to rip three bowls before they can go play, so I guess its up the person

I could never play drunk, sloppy guitar w/ Jim Morison on vocals....

Stoned is something else, while I don't think I would go out at a serious gig stoned and play, I often times pick up the guitar/bass/whatever, fire up the four track and just improvise.

Usualy this tape gets revisted sober and the music and lyric raps i do get refined into something usual. (IE, no 3 mintue solos between each vocal line..)
