actually when Michael Howser died (rip mikey) Herring was the bands first choice to take over lead but he had just signed a contract for Phil. Ever since panic decided to continue Herring was learning the cataloge of songs

I definitely agree Karan, Garvey, and Schnier would be up there also. I definitely think Herring, Haynes, Cinninger, Anastasio, and Bayliss need to be near the top. And Bobby definitely takes the cake for best rhythm. Nobody plays rhythm in the same style as Bobby.

Warren I think may be the best guitarist alive. That said for jam band music, I just love the sweet melodic tone and fretboard ownage of Mark Karan. Get better brother!

I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on Brock of Pgroove in regards to the people previously mentioned.

In my book, Trey takes it hands down. I saw Gov't Mule back in '02 I think, and though the show was killer, nothing in Warren's playing struck me as very innovative or original, although he is definently a great player. Trey has just done so much that is new and original that I think he takes the prize. Also Derek Trucks is phemoninal with the slide, just amazing.

So Herring told you this?

Last I heard Herring, Haynes and Schools are good buddies.

Fact, Dave Schools is credited for being one of the primary people who helped Mule get through the passing of Allen Woody.

Schools and Haynes go way back as do Herring and Haynes. I would venture a guess that if asked, Haynes would have recommended Herring for the Widespread gig. Not that Herring needed any recommendations mind you.

Warren left Phil after his run with the Dead to focus on Mule. About a year or so later, Herring left Phil to do other things.

So speak from knowledge, not just conjecture.
