It's amazing how many great players are out there that no one ever heard of, and how many mediocre ones that everyone has heard of.

I was going to mention him - he rank pretty high on the sick technique meter.

I just realized Shawn was born the same year as I. Another one that died way too young.

I do dig Joe Bonnamassa even though the guy is kinda full of himself.

I have been a fan of Ronnie for about 20 years. When he first started getting clean, he would cling to me at shows. I had a couple years clean at the time. I am sure it made him feel safer. From what I understand he is not playing anymore. If anyone knows different please please let me know.

he has a great sound I think - the Live In Europe CD is full of cool clean/slightly dirty reverb washed Strat attack ....
He has albums that are ok but lack the passion he has playing live

And I have to give a nod to my old guitar teacher KB, because he managed to rise above his handicap of 3 fingers on one hand and can still shred like a MoFo and is just an all around great guy .

For mastering a ridiculous instrument (8-string guitar): Charlie Hunter



I was lucky enough to see Charlie Hunter right around the time of the recording of that video. He came and played in a ballroom the size of your typical middle-school gymnasium when I was a student at Penn State. I was amazed at what he was able to do without any accompaniment from other musicians!

And one more, even though it isn't a guitar, Jake Shimabukuro can sure play the hell out of a Ukulele:

Yikes. I had not realized he had passed away. Very sad. He spent some time with some friends of mine in Floyd when he was playing with Jonas Hellborg. I knew he had serious health problems. Bummer.

One that is someone many have heard of but has not gotten his due IMHO is Richard Thompson.

He was a founder of the Brit/Folk/Rock band Fairport Convention - if you've never heard of them they're worth a look too. They've been compared to the Dead but I think more like the Airplane. He was also a big influence on Mark Knopfler thought they're about the same age.

I remember seeing Stanley Jordan's soundcheck at Tipitina's in NO during 1997 Jazz Fest. I was writing for the Park Record, a newspaper in Park City, Utah at the time and got to interview him a bit. The sound check was basically about 5 people in the club during the afternoon. It was surreal.

John McLaughlin is the only guitarist I met where I was literally too floored to handle it, he actually had a visible glowing aura around him, and no I was not tripping in any way. That was backstage at the Beacon Theater in NYC. But we all know him.

How about JD Simo? I just discovered him randomly and damn, this kid smokes. Clearly he is a fan of the aforementioned late great Danny Gatton.
