The only problem I might have with condensers (Beta 87?) is occasionally I need to play with a PA/amp that doesn't have phantom power. Any way around that?

Great points here but everyone needs to find their own Mic. I was very unhappy in how I sounded with my Shure. I went to Guitar Center and they set me up on a PA system and brought over 6 different mics and I basically sat there and soundchecked and sang. For my voice, the Senheisser was the best.

In the 80's I used to have an EV BK-1 (because me and my bandmates at the time saw Jerry using one on a JGB tour) this mic required phantom power, but also had a comparment for a 4.5 volt battery if phantom power was not available. Problem was that it was a bitch to find that battery! (really only camera stores carried them)
