for some reason 73-78 don't leave me much to be desired.... i know its crazy.... I mean there are some sick shows in there, but they just kind of leave me sleepy. I think it may be that we are so saturated with the 73-74-76-77 shows. I know they're hot, but i've been listening to the boyz so long i really need obscurity... or at least somethin that's obscure to me.

There's somethin about 68-69 that never bores me... Shit, that musta been an exciting time for 'em

Get the nails and boards

Either they took a nose dive or the flaws in the machine were more pronounced.

I listen to all the years I just crave different eras in different moods. I guess I listen to 84-85, 94-95 the least. (except 3-23-95 was a great show)

Just a couple questions:

How and what caused Phil to decline in the late 70's? I remember reading in his book that he started on coke, and married his female 'bar buddy' around that time. Is that the reason?

How and what caused Keith to decline in the late 70's? I noticed his playing sounds more repetitive, but why?

I always wondered what drugs they did and when. Esp. Bob and the drummers. Anyone know? Herion effected Jerry's music greatly

Phil became a heavy drinker which is why he gained a lot of weight, that was probably a bigger problem than his drug use.

I think Keiths problem was a combination of things, his marraige falling apart, drug use, lack of self esteem.

Everybody started using coke I think in either 74 or 77

(these facts are all what I remember from Phils book)

I tend to stay away from anything after Brent died, but their show from 9/24/91 was pretty good.It has one of the best Drums/Space that I've ever heard.

According to Mountain Girl, flurries of coke started entering their scene around 1970, and by 1974 had become a huge blizzard. Scully has a story from Europe 74 where one night they all threw their coke stashes away because it was such a source of problems and huge expense with the crew and band. JG, Scully, Kahn(not quite sure about him), KG, MH, and probably assorted crewmembers all started getting into H around 77.

Something about '72-'74 really rubs me the right way. They seemed more like a "shoot-'em-up saloon band" (to use Jerry's phrasing) back then, their playing was always solid and their jams seemed more adventurous.

'68-'69 was indeed very exciting. There are even a good few '67 shows worth listening to.

Beyond that, I can't really get into anything past '77-'78, and I'm not even a huge fan of that era. Too hit or miss.

Too bad there weren't more shows during their '75 hiatus. Their renditions of the Blues for Allah material on those dates sound particularly inspired.

I just realized I pretty much have nothing from 76, not that it was a horrid year, just that its overshadowed by 74 and 77

I tend to think of 1976 as a rebuilding year, getting back on the tour horse (pun not intended) after 1.5 years and with Mickey and Billy getting reaccustomed to one another and just beginning to forge a new sound together, and perhaps lastly a year where Phil's playing was occaissionally far from his best (8/4/76? flame away), but there are several absolutely stellar perfomances like 7/18/76... or 9/24/76, that one KILLS!!

Only thing I have from 76 is dick's picks 20 and there is some good material on there. Orange Tango Jam is the first thing that comes to mind.
