The only time I've ever really regretted being a lefty was the other day, when my friend Steve interviewed Bob Weir backstage and broke out two righty guitars for a few minutes at the end. Missed my chance at that one.

When I was a kid, I picked up a guitar for the first time as a lefty. It was strung righty, but that's what felt comfortable to me.

I happen to be more or less ambidextrous; my right hand is my dominant hand, it's what I throw with, I swing a bat and a golf club right handed. But I write with my left hand.

But to me, playing guitar lefty works better, because I am using my stronger dominant hand to do the most involved work, i.e., the fingering. Why would you want your weaker hand doing the hard part?

It can be a drag not being able to play someone else's guitar, but it can also be a blessing when someone wants to play yours (and you don't really want them to).

FWIW, I can play a right-handed bass upside down with no problem if I don't look down and see what I'm doing. Righty guitar, not so much.
