'Was listening to the E72 JS on the ride home last night. Man, who laid down those high harmonies??? Very Sweet. I know it should be Phil Lesh but it sounds more like Bobby singing high harmony to himself to me (ala studio vocal re-do's that were done).

That's Phil, but they redid a lot of the vocals (and some of the instruments) after the fact by setting up the stage again and using the same mics and multitrack recording equipment.

Although, I think if you listen to that particular Jack Straw, which I think was from 5-4-72 Olympia Theater in Paris, his vocal was right on. He was a very good harmony singer in terms of pitch, before his voice got damaged.

Agreed, and his blend was surprisingly good, too.

Here's a Jack Straw that we did last month that I really enjoyed. The vocals are rough because we hadn't practiced it with our new female singer yet (and just haven't practiced it much). I though it was pretty good musically though. Just an extra song after we finished our setlist.

Very difficult song to play correctly. Takes a major team effort to get it right. If one part is off it really stands out.

Awesome list! West LA has some good ones, too... I like to drop them 70's style. Bertha Bombs are fun but you're stuck dropping them when Bobby decides. Miracle has great bombs. Birdsong has some great "gentle" bombs... if there is such a thing.

"gentle bombs"...I think we've found a new oxymoron. But perhaps I'm the only one loving this...will this be followed by a deafening silence???

Actually, eventually the Dead did the bombs in Bertha the same way every time:

Each verse has four lyric lines (1,2,3,4).

First time around on guitar solo:

1) no bomb
2) no bomb
3) bomb on 2
4) bomb on 3

Solo over chorus, then second time around:

1) no bomb
2) no bomb
3) bomb on 4
4) bomb on 5 (the "1" on the second measure)

Third verse:

1) no bomb
2) no bomb
3) bomb on 2
4) bomb on 4

So, it's 2-3, 4-5, 2-4. These are the little things that set apart the bands covering the Dead. It knocks me out when I see people picking up these subtleties.

We fumbled it a little bit here, but you get the idea (starts at 2:30 or so ... watch Jimbo, LOL):
