I generally accept requests from people if I know who they are. I will de-friend people who appear to simply be amassing friend lists or flood me with BS or other stuff. If they are persistent and I care about their feelings, I will simply hide their stuff. I don't make friend requests simply because I know who someone is.
Here's a good one on FaceBook Friending. Afunny and well written little diddy.

Sorry if I offend anyone but if we haven't chilled in real life I don't add on FB.
Yeah, I wouldnt post my name or facebook in a more random forum, but this one if so idiosyncratically topic driven, I already know that I have a lot in common with the folks on here.
Its not like I am inviting anyone to my house. I always have the option of unfriending someone. I also don't let too much out of the bag on facebook, so I am not exposing myself to anything.
I don't accept collectors, and anyone who sucks gets shown the door toots sweet.

Understand, Jahozer. Aside of from music I am fairly private about my shit. There are plenty of folks in the real world who I won't friend on FB cuz we aren't that close! I guess for me I wanted it to be different than MS where everyone ya ever met, knew once knew, met once, friend of a friend who mentioned your name once to somebody is on your list. That got uber annoying.

I can respect the fact that you want to keep the circle tight.
Facebook for me became what you describe with myspace. Old high school friends and a LOT of acquaintances. All my old girlfriends found me, (dodged a few bullets there! )
So I just take it for what it is.
Stephen Colbert described it best. "Facebook. The best way to find out what your old friends are doing and not caring, all in the same ten minutes!"
