I like Scully's book far greater than the others. He finally confirms what that black soot is on Jerry's fingertips from about 1980-on. And it ain't Finger Ease I'll tell ya.
What exactly is that "Soot"? I never read the book.
The soot is from Jerry burning his fingers chasing the dragon. But, That's exacly my point about the Skully's book. Fabricated or not, Skully, self proclaimed himself the closest and best friend of Garcia, goes into the most detailed a personel description of Jerry, focusing most of the book on his drug use, bathroom habits, and other stuff, only your "best friend" would know. If he was his closest friend and confidont as he proclaims, why write a tell all book on your best friend; that's bullshit. Obviously he's still sucking what he can out of Garcia.
I agree to disagree....

The Grateful Dead were not known as peace loving hippies. They were generally a bunch of back stabbing lowlifes from the get-go. Garcia included. Self proclaimed pirates looking for some booty. As far as sucking what he can out of Garcia, Scully really only touched the surface with the dirt. He wrote a middle of the road "tell-all" about his experiences. There are lots of great facts in his book that are accurate and informative. He didn't do any damage to Jerry's legacy. Jerry very skillfully did that on his own.

After Jerry died Rolling Stone had that great issue with interviews about Jerry from various friends and associates.

I decided Merl was probably Jerry's best ally of all for when they asked him about Jerry's H habit, Merl gave the ole "He never did it front of me so I don't know what you're talking about" line. That's a team player. Others feel the need to cash in as previously mentioned.

However, I liked Scully's book and don't think he set out to write a tell all, and in the end didn't really read like one. Let's face it, it isn't like Jerry was mother Theresa.

How much money did any author make off of any Grateful Dead book???
Sorry, but no one "cashed in" on anything.
We're pretty much the only ones who bought 'em, boys.
Party on.

Jonarob pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I knew Scully real well back in the day and spent many a hour sitting on his couch waiting for deals to go down.

All and all, I think Scully paints a pretty accurate picture about his association with Jerry.

Pirates, yes indeed....

Yeah, and that says it all. "Deals" Suck more suckers. And when you get confused just listen to the music play... because thats where I believe Jerry's focus was, the MUSIC, nothing more; all else was periferal.

I love how Jerry riffs on that 7th during the intro to China Cat....

If you want "dirt" on Jerry, read Parishes book! I thought he did a real injustice to his friendship with Jerry, like talking about the time Jerry offered heroin to Steve after his wife and kids were killed, etc. Scully's book had me laughing while Parishes book made me cringe.

Meh. No one did it for free, writer, publisher and retailers, and normally book deals are dealt with a lump sum up front to the writer. Maybe Scully didn't get the check that Condy Rice just got, but I am sure he went tot he negotiation table with $ on his mind. Who wouldn't. The contracts usually have kickers for volume milestones, and none of us have the details on how Scully's contract read. Safe to assume it was not an entirely altruistic effort on his part.

That, and I really just wanted to quote Perry Farrell.

What I refrained from saying was that Jerry was hold up in Rock's basement only to surface when the 'Deal' was done. I am sure you can figure out yourself what he was doing down there. Jerry had completely lost focus at this time in his life and was running on auto pilot musically. Things changed slightly when Rock was out of the picture but he always returned to his bad habits..

So here's the quote in question from Parishs' book

Speaking of who came to pay their respects

"Everyone from the band came too- everyone except for Jerry, who was too disturbed and shaken by the incident to come by in person. He could be that way: socially awkward to the point of embarrassment."
=============
He then spoke of how he'd insisted that the shows in the coming days not be canceled as was suggested and spoke of the ways in which he received support from so many in the family and then..
==============
"And then there was Jerry...
That first night, when I got to the show, Jerry approached me backstage and gave me a hug. He seemed so sad, so moved by my loss. And then, in a twisted but genuinely loving gesture, he did something that astounded me.
'Hey man,' he said, his eyes brimming with tears. 'You want some heroin? It'll kill the pain.'
I thanked him but declined the offer. 'If I did anything right now - one snort, one drink - I'd never stop.'
He nodded and told me again how sorry he was. In that instant I felt more pity for Jerry than I did for myself, because he really was trying to help. He just didn't know any other way."
================================================================================

I really don't think this is that bad given the context. It's not like he said "Can you believe this friggin junkie offered me smack?" He carefully constructed it to be respectful toward him, and yet give a glimpse into the disfunction that was Jerry while being dominated by his addiction.

Now if one feels it just shouldn't be talked about period then fine - no one should right anything at all discussing Jerry's drug use. Period. There is no middle ground because one would have to arbitrarily draw a line: what can be discussed and what can't, and then you into a subjective minefield. If you're going to delve into what made Jerry tick, including drug use, you best be careful that what is left out doesn't do a diservice to the picture you're painting. If you do, then you're just full of shit and grabbin at the cash.

Frankly it doesn't surprise me a whole lot. Jerry was simply proscribing that which evidently took care of "something (pain?)" in him for the pain Parish was experiencing. It also spoke, to a degree, to the, pardon the pun, high position smack occupied in Jerry's world at that time.

Without anything else to really compare it to, (haven't read many dead related books) I didn't really find stuff in this book that rough. It seemed to simply jive with all I've heard about them. Of course this book is just one mans opinion and at one point he even alludes to a squabble he has with something Scully has in his book from when Parish replaced Scully as road manager.
