His John Mayer Trio from a few years back, when it seemed like he was going to make some "real" music, was pretty good from some of the shows I dl'ed. I guess he has chosen to "sell out" (if that's what you want to call it) and make big money rather than show his true musical talent. He doesn't seem like such a huge d-bag as some people say, as the video someone posted above shows he isn't afraid to make fun of himself. On top of that, the guy tends to date some pretty hot ladies ala Jessica Simpson (although she is no winner).

i actually think hes more real with his music now than hes ever been. imo his first few albums were more "sellout" type stuff than his new stuff.

i think around 2004 or so he got tired of playing these slow pussy tunes and went with the trio, more bluesy, more rock and in the same style as his idols (hendrix and SRV) and he found that he can play both play pop tunes and blues tunes and still be well recieved and liked. i think his new album is really good blend of both blues and pop which is where his heart is more from a musical standpoint. check out the stuff he has on his new live album

We discuss TONS of other bands on this site and so do folks on every other Dead site out there, so I see nothing wrong with having one thread on this guy.

One thing about Mayer that was a huge disappointment to me was when he sat in with The Police on "Message In A Bottle" at LiveEarth - jeezuz you'd think after such a long absence they'd hit the stage w/o guest musicians muddying up the proceedings.

He also shreds guitar with the best of them, check out the Clapton Crossroads Festival 2007 video.
I second the checking out of Crossroads...

Don't have much of a take on him one way or another, but he's a hell of a competent musician.

the crossroads video is pretty sweet, always liked that two-disc set, is the 2008 dvd as good as 2007?

theres only a 2004 and a 2007 dvd, theyre both good. 2007 is really good if you like steve winwood.

oh, I guess Im thinking about the 2004 DVD. Clapton has a crazy "I Shot the Sheriff" on the DVD too if you havent seen it.

hey thought i'd put my 2 cents in. he seems to like himself alot...ya know? but he plays a mean guitar so i'm thinking it's a wash.his playing is based on his influences..you can hear that. I don't really like the "pop" JM...but the "blues" JM I dig.
