The "Hipster's Tricksters" line, anyone every heard that one clearly?

A few that get me:

Eyes: homeland and beaches vs. seasons and evenings

New Speedway Boogie: Just seem to mix up the order a lot, i.e. Things went down we don't understand vs. I saw things gettin out of hand.

well, there you go. for the longest time I thought he was saying "betray the gavels" - like on the run from the law (or the courts) - until i read the lyrics on this site. Seems i still haven't given in to the actual lyrics.

as for re-patriating, it looks like it'll be next year before anything happens. The job i was looking at in NH fell through, so until something better pops up I'm stuck in Turkey, which in all fairness ain't so bad.

On the plus side, I'm heading home for 2 weeks in August, which just happens to coincide with the Ratdog/Allmans show near my family in Massachusetts. Once I finalize my flights, my first order of business will be to score tickets to the show!

Last Verse, I always thought it was

"Now all of those cowboys, out of their gold,
loved my uncle, God rest his soul".

I am now, finally willing to acknowledge that those who say it is:

"Now I love those cowboys, I love their gold".

are correct.

However, #1, I can still swear I have heard him sing it (at times) as I have it
#2, it is so close....."all of those"/"I love those"; "Out of their"/"I love their" (basically, the of/love)
#3, It makes no sense to me. The 3rd verse seems to be a summary of the story. The cowboys were "out their gold" because "we took it". And why would he love them? I mean I get "I love their gold", but why on earth would he say that he loved the cowboys?

As a side note, I saw this song in a published sheet music book once and I said....."Ok, now we get to the bottom of this!". It had verses 1-5 only.

ebick, what I find is that you can get most anything to make sense with the right punctuation.

For example,

I use a compilation of the ideas you mention:

If I go with the love thing...

"Now I love those cowboys, I love their gold".

I change it to...

"Now I love those cowboys: out of their gold."
"Loved my uncle, God rest his soul."

Or I can go with not love, but rather left, because I can use it with the uncle, and it too is so close...

"Now I left those cowboys out of their gold."
"Left my uncle, God rest his soul."

But everyone and their brother thinks of it as love.

I prefer left, but I vary it up with love often enough, and maybe this is part of the reason it gets changed around by those who sing it. Many versions apply.

Well see he does love the cowboys BECAUSE they had gold to take. And he loves their gold that is now his. Like If i robbed someone. Say a rich guy. Id be like Man i love rich guys. And man do I love their money. Am I right?

I started to use HOMEDICS as a nmenomic devise, (cause I saw a commercial or something) just to get the M C and S in a row. And of course the leading H just to remind me to think of it.

Uncle Johns was alway cool because they mixed it up often..I wonder if the put they lyric 'how does this song go' in on purpose becausse when they were writing and rehearsing it, they kept goofing?
