3 of the 4 of us have written originals that we want to pull into the set lists eventually. I just figure that starting off with a name someone else is already using isn't such a hot idea, even though we like it. Right now, we're just working on being a competent ensemble, so little urgency for a name. Still, we'd like one.

Band names are always tricky. It depends on how serious you want to take yourselves. I've had some band names that are just fun sounding (Phunky brewster and the funked up band or Lemac Fodge and the Podunk Prostitutes.) and some more serious sounding names that I usually get from literature. Like Kamala's Garden (you can have that one if you want I'm not using it anymore, it's a Sidhartha allusion)

The keyboard player really likes "Shakedown". I like it too, but there are just so many bands named that. Still, I guess it wouldn't suck.

If you're thinking along the lines a Dead reference name, something I've been liking lately was 600lb Sinners. Or maybe a Dylan reference like The Hamstrung Revolutionaries. You can have either one if you like 'em.

Awww christ trumped again...I always thought Hamstrung Revolutionary Blues was an obscure Dylan song that the Dead did once or twice. I looked it up (at your kind suggestion SS) and discovered it was only done once by the Dead, and I was waaaay wrong. Ooops...live and learn.

Rolling Thunder was a Shoshone medicine man who was I think loosely associated with the Dead. He appeared on Mickey Hart's album and did an incantatation and chant. The album had Main Ten and the Pump song which if memory servwes became Playin' and Greatest Story. Why would you need dmt to open a dictionary?

We just nixed Shakedown. Turns out there is a band in the next town named Midnight Shakedown. No overlap musically, but there could be confusion in bookings, etc.

I kind of like Rolling Thunder and have the original LP somewhere.

Fragile Thunder is cool, too.

I always liked "Keep Flying Speed" it was the name of a chapter in the Ken Keasey book called Sailor Song.

The name Grateful Dead was chosen from a dictionary. According to Phil Lesh, in his biography (pp. 62), "...Jer[ry Garcia] picked up an old Britannica World Language Dictionary...[and]...In that silvery elf-voice he said to me, 'Hey, man, how about the Grateful Dead?'" The definition there was "the soul of a dead person, or his angel, showing gratitude to someone who, as an act of charity, arranged their burial." According to Alan Trist, director of the Grateful Dead's music publisher company Ice Nine, Garcia found the name in the Funk & Wagnalls Folklore Dictionary, when his finger landed on that phrase while playing a game of "dictionary".[18] In the Garcia biography, Captain Trips, author Sandy Troy states that the band was smoking the psychedelic DMT at the time.
