fwiw, it was selected to be on the Remastered version of Workingmans Dead... that's fairly far and wide, no?

Not really. It's a good version of a song on Workingman's Dead, that is why they put it on there, not because Jerry is playing the banjo, or Bob is playing the bagpipes, but because it is a good version.

To my ears it sounds like banjo.
I like the way it sounds.
'Be curious to know what tone factor led to that timbre.
It's on a ReMaster release of a Classic, so I'm guessin' a fair amount of pickers hear the same as you or me.
I'll email Pete Grant just for kicks and see if he has any insight.

I was going to call BS on the banjo in EW offhand, but litening to it on my laptop's speakers made me wonder... the resonance sounds like the banjo's twang. But, after listening to it on my good headphones, it's clearly guitar. You can get that sound playing clean on the bridge pup picking near the bridge. If this was 1/70, he could have been on either SG or the Strat. Either in the bridge position picked that way would get you that sound, I think.

Jerry was a wicked banjo player...there exists SOMEWHERE a picture of Garcia sitting on grass with STEVE MARTIN. Jerry's holding an acoustic guitar and Mr. Cruel Shoes is holding his banjo. They're just sitting next to each other and chatting, it looks like. Would love to have heard that conversation along with a little pickin'!!!
