thats awesome, I got my chance to see the brothers this year at the green concert at piedmont, they sounded pretty good. not nearly as amazing as what you probably saw

theres an open mic i usually go to over at ga tech that allows us to bring our amps, but the problem is no one really comes, even with some flyers. BUT i do get to turn my amp up and really let it go.

Open mics, music store bulletins, craigslist, local forums. They all work great. The most important thing is not to get discouraged. People, especially when they are younger, tend to be less confident in their abilities or potential. This means that sometimes you could be intimitaded by older or younger:) more polished players. I found the most important thing was having a good friend who was already a great player by the time i started. He was patient and interested in me becoming good.Mostly so he had someone to play with, lol. Always try to play with better players then yourself. Its the same as sports. They will make you better and you'll find yourself doing things you didn't know you knew how to do. Remembering them again will be the hard part.

Its funny you say that, because that is exactly how I started playing. My buddy(amazing guitarist and keyboardist) needed a backup guitarist on the acoustic and I was just starting to learn how to play. He always teaches me different techniques and theory, but moved out to west last summer and hasnt been around much since.


I love taking the music to the next level, but never had the chance toplay in an established (used loosely) band, cant wait for the experience!

by the way steve6string, I wanted to ask where they used to play inside the park. those are amazing shots, would the band stick around and hang out with all the folks? wish i had that chance...

Only the black and white photo is from Piedmont Park. As I remember (almost 40 years ago, yikes) in the middle of the park there was an area where a small temporary stage would be setup and bands would play. The Allmans played there fairly often, along with at high school, community colleges, and college gyms in the area. Yea, people would just hang out and talk and listen to the other bands, get high, and eat beans and brown rice that some group always made in enormous quantities. It was an amazing time.

MANNN that sounds awesome, i went and walked around the park looking for the stage but couldnt find it, wish they still had something like that going on, i might have to build a stage and drag it down piedmont!

i used to work with a lady that said she saw the allman brothers at her high school graduation, i couldnt believe it

I feel your "Pain"....
I am few years north of 19.... I live just over in Birmingham, however I too have been having issues with finding other like-minded players but in a different way.
I am not interested in "Working" to get gigs, worrying over if "So and so" will show up for rehersals, as well as all of the other pitfalls that tend to follow a band... I have been there and done that.
My "Pain" is finding musicians that take the music seriously enough to play it with heart, soul and feeling AND have only a desire of creation or interpretation not making money. I can appreciate wanting to perform, that part of the ego is in all of us to a degree and there is nothing like the feeling of connecting with someone for whom you're playing.
I ask for a lot in my "Wants"... however being old and somewhat in the way.... I am mostly satisfied with my own "Sold out, SRO gig" I have just about everynight in the basement studio....
That is a great deal of explanation to tell you, if you ever find yourself in the 'Ham, let me know and would love to sit around and explore some tunes...

next time i come through Birmingham 'll definitely let you know. I really want to jam with some other rukinders, i think it would be a great learning experience.

I feel the same way about the band idea, I'm not doing it for the money and what not, i just really want to improve my playing. The best way I know to do that is to play with better musicians, but havent really been able to find any I would be able to mesh with well with (example - called a guy who wanted to start a "jam" group on craigslist, this group ended up being a metal christian rock band, said they couldnt find room for a hippie )

I mean, the sold-out gigs in my room are always fun and rockin, but I need to get out of the constraints of my bedroom and get out into the world!!!1
