IMO, it's fun to play outside of your normal place, i.e. Grateful Dead and related. It certainly broadens your experience, makes you play different rhythms and riffs and I think, overall, makes you listen a bit differently, especially when you delve back to Dead material. It can only make one a better musician.

At a jam two of us pulled out tabs for 'Melissa' for the first time at the same moment - pretty funny.

I once saw a local alternative band do 'Cry Baby Cry' - Beatles, and it was very hip.

I played with some guys that would purposely play nothing that was recognizable to the casual listener but by artists who were, if that makes sense.
We weren't gigging obviously, heh, heh.

You could always throw in some Television. You have the right set up for it. Kind of a curve-ball but fitting. Anything off Marquee Moon, the rest of the albums are a little more layered By myself though I like to play Sun City Girls stuff. .
