The advent of online trading, w/the music sitting on servers available to anyone is different than what was enisioned and allowed years ago. The surviving band members all remain taper friendly. Allowing tapers to record and trade freely. The dead always protected their sbd outputs and recordings.

I don't know about you guys. but I do my job for compensation, preferebly as much as I can get. The dead had a phenomenal overhead (because of their generousity), as soon as touring revenue ceased, finanacial difficulties began. To maintain their archive appropriately the only real option was Rhino.(based on what I've read, I have no 1st hand knowledge of this)

The music is still freely available for trade the way we did it years ago, person to person (actually you got it easier you can still meet and seak trades online)

They got paid for the concerts and all the merchandise they sold at said concerts.
So they were compensated.
They just want to be compensated more.

Sure times change.
But they didn't stop any of it at first;they let it go on.And I disagree with the "Dead protect their sbds"'cause it was the Deads people who spread the stuff in the 1st place.And I've heard that sometimes Heads were allowed to tap into the main board at various times.
And the music is out there now.Its too late to go back.
It only fuels bitterness with the people who actually pay the Deads bills.

What are the fans gonna do - burn the sbds?
Only listen to official releases?

Whether its a single guy with shows he wants to trade or a site like the Archive- its too late.
If it was the new Ratdog cd that was being released illegally I could understand that,but all these sbds are out there and Nothings Gonna Bring 'Em Back.

Aud's, Not SBD's. Im sure even Jerry would say be happy with the Audience recordings still being out there for the taking. And I mean how can you really get mad at them for it? If they left it up there then what would happen with this release they are dropping now? Nothing! Cuz who the hell, with a computer, would buy it? Of course there are some. But I know I wouldnt. And a good portion of you guys wouldnt either. At this point though I dont buy the stuff to support the band (they have enough money as is) so much as I buy it to not take legal risks. They still do crack down on random individuals for pirating. Me, Id like to avoid that.

But hell yeah Cant wait for this set. And yes they realllllllllllllllllllly need to put out DVD's. Like lots and lots of em.

I read an interview of Betty Cantor who said the purpose of the soundboards was for quality control.To make sure everything was sounding as it should;and not meant for listening use.I read that in a Dead Base type book that was filled with cool interviews of the Deads employees.Hey they didn't have their shit together and now its stick -it-to -the -fans time.
Not to mention that an official release will sound way better than its soundboard.
Ya know the boards that got the kick up high or no Bob or whatever.
When a release comes out it is remastered and is better sounding.People will BUY that ! And I buy them whenever I can.I never download but my friends do and I benefit.We Spend the $$$$$ we they release anything.I mean this new series called RoadTrips is a glorified mix tape.A joke.
I guess the thing that bugs me is that it is so UN-Deadlike.It only hurts the die-hards.Nobodies going to the Archive ,finding the Dead for the 1st time,and only listening to the free stuff.
And I dont see this as "Stealing" from an artist.At all.Its a mess of the Deads own creation.Soundboards were out there way before the Archive and people traded them.The Dead never said No trading of soundboards.
When it benefited them to let people download they were fine with it.
This situation is maybe unique to the Dead and I can see why other artists would do the same.But not the Dead.
To me the Dead = Red White and Blue,apple pie ,a can do American spirit,Freedom and all things wholesome.
It almost hurts to see the end coming.

Now to respond to your post...I dont know for sure but id be willin to put money on it that the dead WERE and STILL ARE against trading of soundboards. Just cuz they didnt start every show with "Dont trade our sbd's" does NOT mean they werent against it. And as for your statement of them lettin it run on archive for so long. If you ask me they probably didnt even know about that shit. Those are user-submitted sbd's on there if Im not mistaken. So the Dead had no say when it went up there. Same with Speedingarrow. Its not like they let that stay up for so long. They simply didnt know.

12 years.
Is based in Cali.
And the Dead had no clue?
They got front office types with computers.
And lawyers too.And we pay for 'em.
I bet its more likely they saw the Archive as a way to bring in more business.For 12 years it worked for them.
Free advertising.
So it worked for them and now its We need more Money.
Its a total slap in the face.
Its all about the money is what gets my goat.
The sbds are out there already.So what are they gonna do next ?
Go after anyone that trades sbds?

First off dont be so sure that they even knew about it. Second, No all the heads will NOT go buy the official releases. Third, so what if its all about the money. Its their god damn job man. Sure they got money and probably a decent amount. BUT why the hell would they wanna settle for less? Like if you made 15 an hour and your boss gave you the option to make 20 an hour but you had to upset a few people you wouldnt? Yeah BS!! You would in a fuckin heartbeat. Same thing with them. Their lawyers tell them you can make this much more from cuttin archive and speedingarrow and they are just gonna say "No we have enough money"? hell no

I used to go to Jersey to a shop called Now and Then.A music store. In the corner the guy had bootlegs for sale.Bootleg records,tapes, Vhs.Crappy stuff.
This was the mid 80s.
Same thing at music conventions except there would 100s of guys selling all kinds of bootlegs.
To me this is what the Dead were fighting against.
It used to be hard to get sbds and the only way was trading and as long as no money changed hands I felt it was cool.I didnt care how people got 'em- just that they got 'em.
I think the source of the sbds was Dead employee's.I think the Dead knew shit was leaking out the whole time and didnt care.If they cared they would have stopped it by firing people and by getting the word out that sbds are not cool.
I think the Dead wasnt to concerned about it cause they knew the only people who wanted 'em was the die hards.The golden gooses.They aint the Rolling Stones.The Dead is underground.
I think it only hurts the real fans by shutting down the archive.
With the Archive they could at least monitor what was out there.
I would rather listen to the releases any day over sbds cause the quality blows em away.I still buy stuff when I can.I think for the most part we all do.
Besides they cant release it all anyway.
So what do they do? Take it all away.
Its more a bad PR move I guess.They are some bright guys.They should figure something out.
Its in every Heads genes to want to tape.Sometimes the aud. shows just dont get it done.
