i'm a big john scofield fan. the clips i heard of scofield and warren haynes playing with phil's band are some of the best post-dead recordings of grateful dead songs, IMHO.

my lineup would be:

billy
mickey
phil
bob
rob barracco (sings like early garcia)
warren haynes (to sing the jerry ballads)
john scofield (awesome dynamics and melodic sensibility in his solos)

thats right folks, 3 guitars, and not jackie green wanking off on stage (sorry but i can't get into his versions of jerry tunes..... sugaree just sounds sleezy...)

And I can get what youre saying about Jackie. He turns Sugaree from a heartfelt ballad into a drunken barroom serenade of a dirty street woman. Ugh, and his guitar playing is so . . . . pedestrian?

You pretty much hit the nail directly on the head with that description, Cap'n. The Grateful Dead were truly about filling out the melodic and rhythmic accompaniment to their songs, with each member bringing a fairly complex element into the mix. Jackie's playing does not really fit with the style, though I think seeing him doing his own stuff with an acoustic guitar could be much much better.

I really like that version of Brokedown Palace with just JG and Phil in Phil's basement, so he really isn't all bad, just not a great fit in a big intense band like Lesh has going.

Totally, just with an acoustic and vocals, it would sound good but I cant see him bringing that much to a song like Help>Slipknot or Dark Star in terms of rhythm.

Yeah, not much interesting rhythm or melody on the jammy songs by Jackie. Its not that I dislike him, just not in Phil's band
