DO NOT use Casey Jones (Garcia/Hunter version). Hearing the first line every time you get a call gets old fast.

Sugar Mags has been working for me.

Well, I've got st. stephen as my ringtone. It starts up right at "st. stephen with a rose..." Always starts a conversation :)

I think Throwing Stones would make a pretty cool ringtone. It has a pretty distinctive intro. If not that then +1 on Help.

my favorite Dead intro by far
That would definitely be a good one. And whoever mentioned Gomorrah the opening chords to that would be great as well. I found it funny that your in a dead forum yet when you mentioned the possibles you didnt even have dead in there. Tsk tsk... My ringtone right now is YYZ by Rush and prior to that it was St Stephen.

Ah, the beauty of Nick Drake would be nice as well, so unique. Reminds me I should learn some tunes in open tunings.

Me too. Got a call while checking out at the grocery store the other day and the clerk asks "Nickleback?"

I though she'd gotten the change wrong.

blob, i tried to find some dead songs, but because i was limited to just the first 20-30 seconds of a song, i couldn't find any good candidates. As I mentioned before, I only have 2 dead studio albums, and both are heavily acoustic. Acoustic doesn't sound too good from my mobile phone speaker. The intro's gotta have a screaming guitar. As for live dead, it usually takes about 5-10 seconds after the song starts for the boys to get rollin', which means that the phones rung like 3 times before i even hear it.

That being said, I found some gems in the Jerry studio albums that start off with a bang:
Tore up over you - off Reflections
Might as Well - off Reflections
Rhapsody in Red - i think Cat's Under the Star

i'm not a huge fan of Rhapsody in Red, but the intro is rockin'. I rarely listen to the whole song, though.

Thanks to phil for suggesting the MP3 cutting software. I've already got a couple of great ones - clips from the jam in Here comes sunshine off DP1, a a piece of Scarlet Begonias (5/8/77), jerry's solo from Ramble on Rose (europe '72)... now that I can cut where i want, the possibilities are endless.

Keep in mind whatever song you choose will become intolerable to you after several incoming phone calls... :-x
