Love Dylan, love his voice and his songwriting. So much more than just a great poet. He wrote for his voice and great melodies.

I like most of the covers they did and all the JGB ones. Much prefer Jerry doing Masterpiece, it's loses all it's power when Bobby did it.

Jerry is right up there with the Byrds and The Band when it comes to Dylan covers.

as is all of this of course. You can't control what you really like musically, and what you don't. Although it is true that my opinion of certain music changes or evolves over time.

That being said there is only one song thats a cover of a dylan song that to me is close to as good as dylan doing it himself. Jimi doing all along the watchtower.

Bobby singing Desolation Row = awesome. And Garcia Band does a monster Simple Twist of Fate. Even Baby Blue is great.

Really?! I've got 8-10 JGB shows with him singing it and I miss Bobby each time. Jerry always seems a bit whinny in that song. Plus JGB doesn't do the key change. And there is not build up intro, etc... JGB seems bland in comparison.

Actually a friend of mine pointed this out to Jerry b4 a show, and of course, Jerry laughed and said oh , yeah I remember that, and that nite the JGB played it correctly.

Not true. Well, partially untrue. Bobby often does the bridge w/ Ratdog, though I can't recall a version in which he did it w/ the Dead. Something tells me early on when they started playing this song he may have done it at least once, but that could just be me mixing up my shows.

PS - seeing Bobby tonight at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in NH! Sweet! Maybe he'll play it?

Having mostly skipped it for years for some reason, I recently revisited and learned "Senor" ala JGB.
The song lays out nicely on guitar, and you can take it few different directions, like a bit more uptempo blugrass feel (Tony Rice does a full bluegrass version on his Dylan covers album), or with a moderate tempo spanish feel (bossa - think 'Blue Spanish Eyes' style), or, kind of along the lines of a 'West LA' feel.
I'm a big fan of Masterpiece, fwiw.
BTW, How is/was it that Jerry could remember 27-somthin' verses of Tandled Up In Blue, and yet blow every line of Bertha?

I love the Dead dylan covers myself. Love em all. Random sidenote question. A guy at work said Jerry played a song or maybe two one night by himself on stage at a Dead show. Anyone know about this? He thinks its from Capitol Theatre.
