uh Mark Karan never equals Jerry, man. In Fact, Bob needs to dump markie mark and keep on truckin with Kimock. Even Kimock is no Jerry, but at least he is not a sub-par showboater.

This is probably for a nother post all together but give me mark karan over kimock every day. Mark karan is my favorite post "jerry" player out of all the ratdog/dead/phil and friends line ups. Although the shows with scofield rocked pretty hard too with phil.

Don't get me wrong here: Scofield is one of the all-time greats of jazz guitar, and even very cool when combined with jam/jazz straddlers like MM&W but SO wrong for Grateful Dead music. Throw in Osby on soprano sax and even something as fiery and bombastic as Other One becomes a smooth jazz bowel movement. That said, as long as Phil is having fun, then I am totally happy for him... I just won't be listening much.

I felt sorta the same when I heard about scofield being in the line up. However he seemed to be able to change the way he normally plays for those shows. It didn't really sound like "scofield" he was using a lot of typical rock licks and chuck berry sounding guitar licks for those shows. I thought they were quality shows for sure. I was on a message board on phil's site maybe 2 years ago and people where talking about how they would be super excited to see a tour with the core 4, hornsby, osby, kimock, and joan osborne. That would have been some smooth jazz and some annoying vocals imo.

I understand this but don't get stuck into a pattern of just listening to the dead all the time.

There many great bands and solo artists around these days, most are in the alt-country and sort of alt-rock scene a little off the map. You can't go looking for anything like the GD because it just isn't out there.

But theres so much great music out there, give the dead a little break for a while then when you go back to them you'll appreciate them even more and you'll hear new things in it.

wait... scofield is in the current line up?!?!?! (please, god?!?!?!?) is larry cambell gone or at least not lead guitar anymore? will scofield be at the syracuse show or was it a short time thing?

No scofield is not in the current line up. He played with phil and friends either last summer or the summer before for about 10 or 15 shows. The line up WAS

Phil
Campbell
Scofield
Joan (ugh!)
Molo
Barraco (My favirote phil keys player)

Scofield might have even played a show with trey. I don't really remember. But campbell is your guy for this tour. I don't really like him myself. I think it's cool he can play so many instruments and I have respect for him. But to me herring and haynes were phil's guitar players. I like barry sless a lot too but I was upset when I heard campbell was replacing herring a couple years ago.

Anyone here ever done some psychedelics before jamming? Was it worth it? Anything cool come of it. Me and my band are thinking about trying it for a nice spacey jam
