The best is definately about taste .... there are so many great players out there these days ... hell there are some great players here in the Denver area ... some of them playing tonight ... I just know one guy who should never be on this list, Larry Campbell, I eally don't even think he's all that great of a player period, I'm playing with a guy tonight I like ALOT better than him personally ...

I WOULD AGREE THAT WARREN IS At the TOP OF THE LIST FOLLOWED BY TREY BUT ALMOST EVERYONE MENTIONED HAS GREAT SKILLS AND TALENT

I dunno. I think Trey can sound a lot closer to Warren than Warren can sound like Trey.

That is, I doubt Warren could pull off a Famous Mockingbird or YEM, while Trey can more-or-less play Haynes-like blues licks.

I'm split between Trey and Herring...

Fareed Haque does the trick for me. He seems to have access to a limitless well of grooves and melodic mayhem. (I guess more properly, he is a jazz/classical/world guitarist who plays in a jam band.) A lot of love for many on that list though.

However, Trey's glory days are long past imho, (until the glorious day they return![?]). I finally got to see some of his TAB band on PBS Soundstage the other night and must admit to being bored almost to weeping... but I fell asleep before the tears could fall. Seriously, his soloing is a pale mediocre shadow of what it once was, and his horn section is downright annoying.

trey is getting better, trey band is pretty boring, but other non phish stuff like oysterhead is fantastic, i think tab is an exception..

definitely trey, warren, and some of the other guys mentioned are at the top right now

anyone who doubts or denies the fact that Jimmy Herring is the best guitarist on scene today is a moron. The man learned the entire Widespread catalogue in months, an amazing feat considreing the vast array of material. and as for whoever was boasting about warren playing with the best bands, lets not forget the fact that Jimmy played with The Dead along side Warren Haynes until he got sick of Haynes' glory-mongoring antics. Col. Bruce Hampton and the ARU, anyone???????

I think most of the players on this board could learn the entire widespread panic catalog in about a month!!!! They always seemed like SKynyrd if they we're from Sanfran in the 60's,to me.Really easy, non imaginative stuff. Just not my thing. I agree that Herring in the Dead was great, and Warren kind of thru too much into the mix with 3 guitarists. imho
