I'm not really a bass player but I have fun pretending on occasion I've always been a P-Bass fan. There's something about the pure simplicity of the slab body, 1 pickup, and a neck. Raw power. I've got a cool '73 P that has be re-setup like it was originally - LaBella flatwound strings. Old-school and cool.

Im a Modulus Bass guy/ Phil lesh used some sick modulus basses in his career, But Fender Jazz Basses are fine, or even Squires if you dont have a great dum of money
