I can read rhythms if there written down in notation and play them fine at this point, and ive got the minor penatonic down well and am coming along well with other scales but the hardest thing for me is still just listening to a song and trying to pick out the rhythm. If I like rhythm deaf or something?

all you got to do is get fucked up and make up some chord progressions, try to switch em up, learn by yourself, your own style, but use other peoples styles to influece yours

I think JackO is saying he can't hear the rhythm part in a song. And maybe if he's listening to some 90's Dead he may be hard pressed to isolate Weir! He may have to find some sparser music. Johnny Cash came up.
I'm with August, play with other people, you can't help but learn.

And check out Dark Star Orchestra's site. Find the music link, then the acid planet link. You can hear something like 50 of their tunes. Rob Eaton is always very present in the mix so you can "hear" that rhythm part. Besides that....he's awefully good!
