Or bridge the gap: find some harder stuff you both can enjoy and work from there. What about Zappa, King Crimson, Hendrix, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Black Sabbath... Aquarium Rescue Unit?

The song that got me into this genre of music 4 years back was Kidney In A Cooler by Keller Williams. From there I listened to just random mix's of the dead and have since pretty much forgotten about Keller lol. But still try Keller who knows. Like TS said you gotta bridge the gap. Zappa is definitely a good start. My guitar wants to kill your mama would be a good'un
