I suspect that the late-20s is when things start catching up to you, we're starting to loose some of that resilience that we have in our youth. Increased intake of whatever various substances leads to bad choices whether overdose, accident, or getting into a bad situation.

"What in the world ever became of sweet Jane? She lost her sparkle; you know she isn't the same. We're livin' on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine. All a friend can say is "ain't it a shame?""

One gets the time to start drinking (and never stop), smoke marijuana until high becomes sober, snort cocaine just so that can get one high, and then start using heroin because cocaine no longer gives one the rush of energy it used to. One invites more drug dealers into the scene so they can always get their fix, but then they find new drugs and new problems. And then to escape the problems, more drugs. 27 may give someone enough time to get famous, and then just "Charlie Sheen" their self over.

There is such a promotion of drug use in the music industry, yet all the stories tend to have tragic endings.

also FWIW, 27 was my hardest year on the planet. I didn't die, I'm not famous, and I wasn't aware of the 27 club...but it still was a crazy friggin year for me
