We don't own this music, though we act as if we did, it belongs to the children of our children's kids....
It's been more than 10 years since the start of the Etree project, 5 since the birth of Archive's Live Music Archive. There is already a tremendous volume of high quality shows out there, so the notion that trading MP3 format would dilute the pool is not really a valid one.
If this were an issue, archive.org would have made the decision to NOT allow the download of shows in lossy format. Etree did just that years ago, yet it never snubbed Archive.org, Sugarmegs, Further.net or any other site that offered lossy formats for download.
How much of a purist are you? You prepared to refuse to trade if the md5's don't match. Or if the source's origin was in dispute. Or if a sound card that did bitrate resampling were used for the conversion...
