As a guy that took ( and passed with an "A" ) statistics in college ( and was smart enough not to pursue it any further lest the GPA quickly sink ), I'd say that yes, you need to look at the underlying data. Seems fihy to me.
On a personal note, I've met many, many deadheads, and for the most part, not a dull tack in the bunch - excepting the ones that just showed up to get as wasted as possible. I think compared to say, your average Ozzy or KISS fan, we're a fairly bright bunch.
That being said, the hands down smartest in a slide-rule in your pocket kind of way crowd I've ever been around at a rock show has always been at a King Crimson concert. Geek rock all the way baby!
