I've been working off this video for the last month, hours at a time. The signature lick, the sort of Q and A conversation of the guitar, comes from the 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, frets position, working off the 9th fret mini barre as a frame of reference.

Then for the refrain to the question the whole thing slides up to the 11th fret position.

You keep working the two motifs together, complimenting each other, and try some improv when you get used to things.

He gets the sweet descending lick close to the end with a high e string single-note two frets higher than that last position I posted above, and then he falls comfortably into the last position when he brings his whole hand down to the 11th fret again.

And at the end of it all, use the top three high strings to form the triads for the descending chords...E...B...E...B, and then whole barre chords on the B...F#...F#...E

It's interesting that the song cannot be played in a different key. I tried transposing to the key of A, two frets lower, and it doesn't sound right at all. Loses everything.

ive actually tabbed out the (as accurately as possible) the main lick jerry does at the end, check the ruben and cherise forum


but yeah, after watching the vid i went to my loop pedal and looped the main chords, and discovered that really b is the only scale that seems to make sense. even over that hanging E chord, E major doesnt seem to work

I've watched this vid so manny times now.

When Jerry comes in with the lyric, "The crowd closed in, Ruby stood as though alone," you can see him look to his right and smile at John. What I think is going on is that Jerry remembered the lyric, that perhaps he would flub this on occasion, and so the song was on track without any fatal errors. He does change up a few other lyrics, for example, "The voice of love..." instead of "The truth of love," and there's one other, which I can't remember now. But all in all, a very solid performance.

His chords are so powerful at the end, after the 4 in a row signature call and answers at the end, involving those high triads for the last of the 4, and then he is at the 7th fret for the B...F#...F#...E. I can't get enough of that.

Anyone have a solid handle on what he's doing with those full sounding chords just before the final look at everyone E...E...F#...B, noodle, windmill, B?

I think the full sounding chords may be B...F#...F#...E...E...F#...E...E...B...F#...F#...E. It seems he's suspending things by not going to the B chord, opting for going straight to the F# from the E right in the middle.

It''s the whole step major chords E and F# that tips it off that this is in the key of B major and gives us the E Lydian (4th degree of B major) jam. All of those chord tones Jerry arepeggiates are within that scale.

Great vid post by the way, I never knew how well I could solo on the end this song as I don't ever recall jamming the end out in my 16 years on the guitar. That in itself is a travesty.
