Hi, im new at this genre but what i have listened i loved it, i think is an incredible from of music.

But i would like you to recomend me what thing to listen becasuse i dont know nothing about bluegrass, I have listened to some Tony Rice songs but randomly and Bill Monroe, but i dont even know the names of the songs.

I would like some guide or help in which groups, songs, or albums I should listen. doesn't have to be just old bluegrass, but some knowledge about which are good groups and all that.

I would be ver grateful.

Definitely check out some of the more traditional grass (Scruggs). Also, check out some recent 'progressive' grass bands, such as 'Trampled by Turtles' and 'Railroad Earth'. I've lost taste for YMSB.

Oh yeah, I love Railroad Earth, I have like 5 or 6 shows, great band, never heard of Trampled by Turtles

I like Yonder Mountain and Railroad Earth. How about SCI's bluegrass? (Hint: SCI made a bluegrass album under the name Billy & Liza, and Railroad Earth used to go by the name From Good Homes.) Hot Buttered Rum is pretty good, too.

Anyone else heard of Blueground Undergrass? They're a fairly new band from Georgia. I have a show where they cover Young's "Hurricane"...

Bluegrass has gotten to be a really big word, kinda like Rock & Roll .... listen to ALOT, all of the bands and artists listed above are worth listening to, I would also suggest Cornmeal, out of Chicago of all places, great band, Todd Snyder from Railroad Earth is one of my favorite new song writers, Wayward Sons in another approach, you see alot of different instrument line-ups in the genre, very accessable music right now, enjoy

I can't believe it no-one's mentioned Old & In The Way!!! They're one of the best in my opinion. I highly recommend O&ITW's first, self titled album and the David Grisman archive release Breakdown also by O&ITW. Also I just started listining to another bluegrass band named "Muleskinner", they'er pretty good. They're Dave Grisman, Peter Rowan, John Kahn, Richard (?) Greene, and someone else. They do versions of Dark Hollow, which is very close to the Deads version, and Cold Rain And Snow which is in a diffrent arrangment. P.S. Where can I find Railroad Earth shows?

yonder- starting to drift away from their barnburner bluegrass stuff into a little more rock, but the shows still kill. they've improved a lot from their '05-'06 slump. the new material is sounding much better

john hartford- anything by john is great. the guy played banjo, fiddle, mandolin, piloted paddle boats, could draw with boths hands at the same time, as well a tap out the beats to his songs with clogs while playing banjo and singing at the same time. try to find 'aereo-plane', 'radio john', 'iron mountain depot', 'john hartford', or 'live at mountain stage' the guys an american treasure

seldom scene- great progressive band from the 80's

new grass revival- sam bush's band from the '80s
hot rize- progressive, but wrote great consice bluegrass tunes. if you can find any shows they play a set of honky tonk in the middle

split lip rayfield- their guitarist just died, but these guys were one of a kind. straight ahead bluegrass/punk

cornmeal- great band out of chicago that does a great job of the talking heads 'naive melody' their female fiddle player is great

old crow medicine show- more old-tyme music, but write great songs and have beautiful voices. look up their new song 'i hear them all' on youtube

avett brothers-interesting stuff. kind of a hybrid of punk, bluegrass, singer/songwriter, and tons of emotion

crooked still- singer imho is better than alison krauss

Around the 60/70's things started to evolve as younger musicians began to reflect other influences:
Kentucky Colonels feat. Clarence White is a good example. Dillard and Clark

Also all of the bands mentioned in the posts above.

If you are a guitar freak look for Clarence White, Tony Rice Norman Blake (more old timey than Bluegrass but maybe we are splitting hairs);

oh, i forgot the osbourne brothers. probably my favorite group out of the 60's. those boys sure could sing. check out the song 'ruby' yonder does a version of it as well
