We are going to take this on as a band. While the song is somewhat easy (except for the time signature and some of the finger picking stuff Jerry pulls off) I think the jam is tricky to pull off as a band - because it's so abstract.

I've been studying it a bit, and I think Weir lays down a lot of structure for Jerry to follow in some of the better jams.

Anyways - here's my take on playing it, with a generous use of effects to colour up the sound. 3leaft Protron, Vintage Boss phaser and a Page boost. I think one of the key effects is the UGB preamp - and I put one of Waldo's units in this guitar........ To get that crystalline clear tone that Jerry often gets out of his intsrument. I think this is one of those tunes where tone is really important.

I recorded first just with a vintage stratocaster, and then gave it a try with a brighter more modern Jerry like guitar. I think that makes a big difference, although I do love those 73 versions.

It's out there to share with folks. Comments and positive feedback is always appreciated. It's pretty much just noodling around the theme, with some D minor chording and riffing sandwiched in-between. I think what I really like about this jam is how they take the theme from a minor feel to a major feel when they drop in and out of the actual song. I'm not that far along yet. :-)

Peace,

That really is sweet riffing. I appreciate the close-ups, I've learned a few things I'll be trying with my own band.

I hope it's not too derailing to ask (and I apologize if you've already explained it) what you use to video/record your clips and also your editing software? It's generous of you to make and share these videos with us. I'd like to do this, too, but have no experience at it and while I recently copped a nice small Tascam DR-40, for video, all we have at home are cell phones and iPads.

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words. Jon, no need to apologize. Not sure if I explained my recording method or not in the past but I posted a "how I do it" on the think tank section. Seemed like a good spot for it, and god forbid we would digress from all things Jerry! I'm already feeling guilty.

Looking forward to seeing you get up and running. And I know what you mean by the close ups. I always appreciate them as well, and learn a lot of tricks from youtube. That's why I like posting. Spread the knowledge. I'm hooked on a few youtube channels for that very reason. There is a deep well of stuff out there, and I can't be bothered to read tab anymore, plus most of the time it's wrong anyways. Using your eyes and ears are way easier in the long run. In a perfect world one should be able to just listen and then visualize what the player is doing. I'm a long way from that, but every year get a bit closer.

Peace,

James

Sounds good James. You definitely paint that tune with color.
