I hear it with a G bass and no low b in the Em chord. Like so:
Code: Select all

Might just be cause I always played it that way but the Em is not working for me and I can't go back.

Yea I'd go with the G bass - hell sometimes I wonder if they're playing a G chord instead of Em.

I'm thinking either play the low B or deaden it, cause the A doesn't sound right to me leading into the A7. What would that Em be anyway? An Emsus4 w/Gbass?

I do not play the low A note in that Em/G chord and will edit that note outa there. I'm torn between playing G, E or nothing on the high E string. Very subtle diff, kinda like the Em in Me and my uncle.

Before the web site and the posting I used to play a G there. Being a relative minor situation, it's easy to get them confused.

However, and it's been a long time, when I was going over the song to do the tab, I heard the Em instead.

I seem to remember watching Bobby play Em but hear them playing G.

I'll watch their "Bozo" show tonight and let ya know!

Bobby appears to be playing an Em in this 94 show. Did Bobby often play in his underware? I was always to far back to notice. I think if you don't play the 2 low strings and play the E bass on the D string it has the soft feel and sounds right.

Hold the phone. In this 70 show, Bobby is playing a G. So it would appear that if your playing in your underware that you should play the Em and the G if you have pants on.
I think my modifed Em/G chord came from hearing it both ways over the years.

That gave me a good laugh. What pray-tell does he play when he wears those flaming pink hot pants?

Checked out a video on utube of Marty Robbins doing the original and he did with a G Am D. Funny thing though was that even with the minor chord Marty was not wearing tight little shorts. Not sure how he pulled that one off. So I imagine that Bob may have learned it incorrectly off of the radio and was probably corrected later on and changed it. All of us old guys learned it from Bob without the minor chord so thats what sounds right to us.

Caution, slight beer buzz and posting!

To my ears: D G A

The Em doesn't sound right with the minor tones.
The A7 doesn't seem to capture the mood right (but sounds okay)

Here is why I'm rejecting the G based on a spritely country/folk intro/outro:
Code: Select all
||: D / / / |  %  | Em / / /   |    %    |
    G / / / |  %  | G F#m Em D | D / / / :||
Play it all off the high strings:
Code: Select all
    D   Em  G   F#m
e --2---4---7---5-------
b --3---5---8---7-------
g --2---3---7---6-------

From that it sounds more verse-ish when you come up to the G.

To me it doesn't sound like a minor at all there
Yep. I've always played it that way... so did Marty Robbins.

Sometimes people get too fancy for their own good.
