Eh...the heck with the haters. I could give you a bunch of examples from this past tour where they just crush it and bring the heat in ways the GD never could (check out the Boogie On from 6-7-12 for an example of this). Not trying to compare the two (even though others here are insistant upon it) because the GD where and alway will be my first musical love, but to say they suck because some of their lyrics are cornball just sounds ignorant. That's the way I use to think about them until I really listened and gave them a fair shake. I realize this is an ongoing never-ending batlle between some Phish Heads & Dead Heads. I'm glad I love them both. They both have a ton to offer.

Thank you, bodiddley, for enlightening me with that example, I will now listen to Phish exclusively. That was always my complaint about the Grateful Dead, how they never crushed anything or brought heat... Lord knows we could all do with some crushing heat. Excuse me while I commit hari-kari with a glowstick.

agreed! I think if there was nothing left to hate there'd still be haters finding shit to hate. Positivity is so much better, and Phish is definitely full of talent and fun times. I'd love if less people liked them, then I'd get my spot at center on the floor more often :D

In Dead-related talk, I don't get following the bass player who doesn't sing and an ever-changing cast of musicians that bring such a huge amount of variety. It's so hit-or-miss IMO.

I love the Grateful Dead and the songs that they cataloged, but live music brings the energy we all love. If there's a vocalist on that stage singing half or more of the tunes, and they're not emotional or don't have a good ear or don't work their voice in a wide enough range, they're going to lose me before the first set's even done. If the guitar playing is uninspired or the tone is shoddy or weak, they're gonna lose me. Lets say a post-Jerry Dead band has it all: energy, quality of instrumentals, vocals, great performance...That's fantastic, right? Then stop switching up the damn lineups! It's infuriating. I love a deeply saturated thirty year foursome. That's some delectable poo.

edit to clarify: i'm specifically talking about Phil and Friends and Further, and mild discontent with the lineups and performances I've seen. I really like what Ratdog puts out there. I fully realize that musicians need to switch things up and play with different people in order to grow and find their niche, and I'm certainly not uber critical of friends onstage, rather I feel proud that they're doing what they do. I'd be willing to bet that any of my discontent stems from wishing I could try what they're doing in a band setting. hope noone was hurt by what I wrote, I know a lot of band peeps come through here and I know they work hard to put out a great performance.

They have changed and they are not extending typeII jams as much as the did when 2.0, but in 2.0 they couldnt nail their composed tunes either, and they are crushing that shit now. They have played 207 DIFFERENT songs this year in under 20 shows! I defy you to find a GD year that comes close to that setlist variety! Everything is a trade off. I think the summer tour that just ended is the best since summer 2000.
Being a native New Englander, I got to see them very early: 1987 as an opener for Max Creek. Loved 'em then, Love 'em now. Great guys too!
big deal GD could have crammed a whole bunch of different songs into their sets but that wasent their point to smush in a thousand songs in a single tour. ......either way phish still sucks. not very mmmmmmmkay

Yeah, YOU would know what the Grateful Dead were capable of. Thanks for enlightening me.....mmmmkay!

they are ripping for sure. i have also never felt like the fans at shows were like "this is our band, go find your own scene". anything goes, and everybody is welcome.

Some change in hair color and I might think this is Trey singing about some Wilson dude encountering the fucking lizard people.

No need to be a smart ass about it. I never said the GD never crushed anything or didn't bring the heat.

I felt like it was an appropriate response. As much as I would like to, I don't post on the Phish forum about how much better the Grateful Dead is, so I have no frame of reference.

Burns.. Man, what is up with you? Are you drinking when you post? You seem to pick and choose what is acceptable to post on here and what is not as though you are gatekeeper. Correct me if I'm wrong but the topic is Phish on this thread? It is but one topic among a multitude of topics on the forum. If it bothers you that much, why don't you just not read it?

A few months ago, you pull some out of context quote from a post I submitted and took up arms to defend the current Saturday Night Live crew ( on a Grateful Dead forum no less) as though I had personally offended you with my blatant disregard for today's SNL. Now you pick a "computer fight" with Bo Diddley over who knows what? I believe Bo Diddly stated that he loved both bands. That's great. Why bother with the pissing fight? I didn't take his post as libelous towards the Grateful Dead, ,moreso, that he really digs Phish. Big F'n deal.

Your MO seems to be, take a sniper shot on somebody's post, receive a rebuttal, take a quote out of context. I'm beginning to wonder if you are just negative all the time or just a "computer tough guy?" And if so, you may want to log in to the Dungeon Dragon site or whatever the hell computer tough guys play online behind a computer screen in the safety of their home.

Where the hell did the JerOplane thread go?

Well said, sir, well said. Can't see how any open minded person could disagree with this.

Phish could whip us into a high energy frenzy for 45 minutes plus straight. That's pretty badass.
The Dead, by contrast, would take us on a journey of highs and lows and leave us breathless. Equally badass.

But in the end, the former is who you sleep with and the latter is who ya marry.

Well, with all due respect, there is a special space here specifically related to Phish. To counter your argument, you are knowingly entering that thread to bash a band many of us love.

Maybe I chose my words poorly by saying Phish could bring the heat in ways the GD never could. Didn't mean it as better...just different. The GD certainley brought tons of heat to many jams. Sorry if that didn't come across clearly.

And for the record, the GD will always be my first mistress.
