Two older musicians who succumbed to Covid 19 this week were pianist Ellis Marsalis and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli.
Interestingly, in both of their obituaries, the same point was emphasized.
Wynton Marsalis said about his father, Ellis, "What I love about his style is that ... he's always listening and always trying to make everybody in the band sound better ..."
Guitarist Ed Laub, a student of Bucky Pizzarelli, shared this advice from his teacher, "If you're planning on being a professional musician, you need to understand that your job is always make the other guy as good as he can possibly sound."
We can honor their memories by applying their sage advice in our own musical careers and lives.
