Hello itsme,
Sugaree is definitly one of my favorites. I'm not great at theory but I'll tell you what I know.
I'll tab out a sample intro. This will give you a feel for the scale. I'll give you a fingering exercise and tab out some scale positions.
First I believe it's in E maj. Or it might be B maj. It has never really mattered that much for me (been playing for 20 plus yrs) since the notes for E ionian and B myxolydian are the same. Take a look.
E ionian-----------------E F# G# A B C# Eb
B myxolydian-----B C# Eb E F# G# A
This song is also a great candidate for chromatics. As far as I'm aware chromatics would be defined as a succession of 3 of more notes one half step (one fret) apart. There are two 3 note chromos in the intro:
d = down strum
u = up strum
red-index finger
orange-2nd or ring finger
violet-3rd finger
blue-pinky
I use my pinky to barre - many use the third finger

You can call the first ascending and the second descending.
Now simply sub in different sequences.
For example, 4-2-3-1, 3-1-2-4, 2-1-3-4 etc.
I'm using the very top of the neck because if you get it down there where the frets are the largest, you'll have the rest of the neck covered. If you have problems there, move up to where its more comfortable until you get it down.
Here's some fingering examples for Sugaree.
By no means is it limited to this. I'll give you 2 I play within.
The first expresses an accent on B maj.
The second will cover similar fingering but accent the E maj.
For anyone who has read some of my posts, they'll know I'm a fanatic for always being mindful of "playing over" chords. i.e. thinking B maj scale accents while playing over the B maj chord and the same for E maj.

I chose these two so you could see how they overlap and to emphasize PLAYING OVER CHORDS.
Also to get familiar with moving up and down the neck.
There are many other positions so down the line I'll post some others like the "boxed" fingering positions which emphasize economy of movement.
Good Luck.
