I had no clue who this guy was, but he wrote the song "Get out of my life Woman", which we all know from the JGB.

I had the privilege of seeing him play with Elvis Costello a few years back - they made an album together called The River in Reverse. To this day, it's one of the two shows I describe as a complete and total surprise - in a good way. Went in expecting a it of the 80's Costello and came out having heard a fantastic rhythm and blues show.
