Tone is subjective, but I think the overall method this guy uses to dial in tone is pretty useful (he is blind). And also what he says about amps and their controls is pretty wise

I agree you need to use your ears, but understanding the circuits helps a lot too! It was a HUGE eye opener for me when I realized that the treble control on fender-style tone stacks is really a sweepable mid-scoop and that the mid control never takes the mids above flat. Certain EQ curves you just can't get from those 3 knobs alone!

even with fenders it depends on the amp. In my ears I hear the Princeton Reverb as being pretty mid-rangey.
