Nice vid, TK.
Hey Man I know we all hear these things differently, fwiw I'm hearing that signature intro riff more like the 00:32-00:52 second mark (using the studio version for clarity):

I don't hear an open A where you say "Open A". I hear Jerry decending from an open D at that point.

Another point I'd kindly point out is that the transition is D B7 F# A(Maj7) (I think you're not showing the D)
The D starts at 2:06 (2:07-2:13-ish) in the above youtube studio version reference.

D----------- B7-------F#.....
Lately it o-cuurs to me

too true - - I'll check it out. so much for relying on brain cells that haven't been active since 79.

thanks, bud. I might have some homework to do over the weekend. don't want to lead anyone astray.

Do you have the maj 7 for the A in *()* so as to be optional? We just covered this for the first time last night and while I know the book has Amaj7 we discussed this in rehearsal while working this up for about 10 seconds before settling on the A instead of the maj7 shape. Haven't spent much time really checking it out so I could be off base with this.

So I had the ol 'ice 9 sheet music book out and was lookin at the A maj7 in truckin. I gave a whirl, then i was thinkin try some different positions. Thinkin of the studio version, Sounded best at the 4th position,
not bad Hmm. fingering something like this>

E|--4-----------
B|-----5--------
G|--------6-----
D|-----------7--
A|--------------
E|--------------

Then I thinks hey check out some vids of the live version.
And well everyone likes '72.
So here in April 17, 1972 at about just after 2 min at the WALSTIB (as i think of it) on the 'long' part BobW goes back to rockin the A in the 5th posit. Maybe the maj 7 tonality is less implied in the live versions I am thinkin, i dunno?

Shoreline 89 looks like Jer is rockin the A as well at about 3 min into but he certainly could be flatin a note for the maj7 in passing or othervise hard to see.

At the end of rehearsal yesterday we had the studio truckin playing and this discussion came up again - about that elusive Amaj7. After reading this post I watched a bunch of vids and bob seems to always be rockin that 5th position A and jerry's general riffing. I don't really hear brent or any other keyboard voicing it. Phil wouldn't be hitting the Ab except as a passing note - Not likely setting up camp there. So I think they just dropped it. YMMV.
