I think it's an octave shifter or something, but I'm not positive. I was listening to the LL Rain from that 10/10/82 that some of you recommended for the Sailor > Saint and towards the middle of Bob's rant at the end of the song (the "Looks like rain and it feels like rain" part) and after Jer finishes his quick "rain" licks, he switches to a different effect.

Anyone know what it is?

Here's the show:

Also, to skip right to that part, you can use this link:

Sounds like Jerry's Octave pedal with some delay. I think in 82 he had switched from the Mutron Octave Divider to a Boss OC-2.

I am sure someone here can confirm and verify.

That's what I was thinking too....he uses something very similar on the 10/1/94 version of So Many Roads at the beginning of the solo, but with much more delay (the best SMR ever, IMO)

The Mutron Octave Divider was still prominent, alongside the Mutron III in Garcia's fx rack until the end of 1989, although I have seen in a few distant pics of the mid & late 80's where there is also a Boss pedal that looks like it could be an OC-2, but it could also be that elusive HM-2 he is widely reputed to have used for distortion, but which I have never seen a clear pic of... HM-2's are black, but I guess stage lighting could impart a brownish hue.

Yeah - it's definitely an octave, with distortion and delay - as well as he has his tone rolled down for that real muddy dirty sound. Good stuff.
