I know there are some pedal steel players who go direct with the SMS Classic, but I know of very few guitar players who can achieve a nice tone without going thru an amp and a real speaker. So much of the magic happens when a guitar speaker moves real air. I'm not a big fan of direct guitar.

I'm not a fan totally. Just aged knees would like to try an SMS->5lb Class D power amp ->1x15 cab. About as lightweight as you can get, other option might be preamp -> Powered PA speaker but thats just as heavy and not as good for Guitar I'd guess.

Gotta get more gigs so I can GET an SMS though!

I believe it gets no finer than this. Ultra high end Class-D amplifier and 1-12" cab. He could likely provide this with the appropriate JBL loaded in it or maybe sell without speaker. I use this for pedal steel. 29lbs, 300 watts into 8-ohms, 500 watts into 4 ohms.

A few facts I'll add:
1) TC is a super nice guy. Brad told him to expect a call from me, I did, we met, shook hands, 10 minutes later he let me take one to test out.
2) The SPLIT sounds amazing. All the portability and volume of a powered main/monitor but sounds like a guitar cab
3) It's so frickin' light it's amazing
4) Build quality was wonderful!

Looked like JK went direct last night on the Furthur broadcast, all I saw was a monitor behind him, no cabinet with E-120s in sight. His rack was split in two, with the pedals on one side, and a Trio on the other.

Weir had a pair of small Mesa amps and Phil a small Eden rig. Club date

Wasn't that show from Sweetwater? If so the place is much smaller than it looks in pics.

As I recall the intent is for intimate shows, closer together on stage, etc, etc.

My bad, misquoted posters. You are right!!
