Thank you river rat for posting the video, and thank you tigerstrat for pointing that whole thing out, that jam is fucking sick. Jerry is on fire, it's so sweet. The boys are on top of their game right there, lucky motherfuckers you guys on here that were at that show. At my age closest I could get to that was the alpine valley grateful dead family reunion with the other ones, I believe they were calling themselves then. That was the lineup with just jimmy herring on the guitar who I thought killed it. That was my favorite TOO lineup, he just has a sick tone. Until furthur that's the closest I thought it got, they raged alpine valley rough. I genuinely had the feeling after leaving that show of yea, this is why we all tracks thousands of miles and see hundreds of shows, to catch those magical nights that are just purely epic, a feeling like no other, a religious experience in a way, I always thought.
Watching those videos that's the sense I got from that night too, the people there knew they were witnessing something truly specialt you can't see anywhere else on earth.
It's almost sad it's named 'downhill from here' , it's so true. They were at the peak of their career in late 89-90 and they played great shows after but it was downhill from there.
Jerry was so on top of his game, his tone was too, just fkn sick
Couple comments on wolf v tiger:
He's using midi all the way through the beginning of that for sure, sounds sick. Sounds like there's one part where he might be mixing some mutron into his midi and it sounds sick, he's doing something crazy.
But then when he switches to wolf into the twin it sounds great, but when he throws on tiger(which took more like 30 seconds than 10 but that's still pretty quick) tiger clearly cuts through better. Idk if tiger is just a louder guitar in general but the tone def cut through more. But when you listen to wolf on the 10/12 show it seems to be cutting through just fine the way tiger did.
Do you guys think tiger got upgraded electronics between summer and fall tour or did he just turn his amp up more? Seems like at first he thought tiger was the better guitar but then for fall tour he chose wolf only with the midi. I was thinking he actually liked wolf better once they tuned her up. Wonder if they had changed anything from the 70's before that alpine show.
The whole thing is just interesting to me.
Fat man on the top of his game, the effects mast, the tone master.
The closest they've come to this is clearly furthur, which I think sounds most like 89-90 dead. Which is interesting bc its Phil's favorite era and I think Bobby's too. Bobby is on fire in that jam right there
Furthur is by far the closest to this sound but when you listen to shit like this, and then you watch a furthur YouTube after it you realize JK's tone ain't got shit on Jerry's. He's doing a good job, he's in the style of Jerry, but his tone is weak compared to garcia's, but Garcia was also the tone master so it's pretty hard to even compare
