i actually have some telefunken 3mm's that i tried sanding down a while back, but even with really fine grain it was rough enough that i'd hear it scratching against the string each note :(

Great thread for the most part. I totally agree that position relative to the bridge is important.

Recently, thanks to Pete B. & my Jazz teacher I started rebuilding my right hand technique. Always trying to work what needs work. I was looking at the Rockpalast video, and noticed that Jerry's thumb when picking was about often about one clock position acute of vertical. This would seem to be contradicted by T14's excellent close up. My take would be that the Master could flat pick, alternate pick, cross pick or any other damn thing. But the sparkly solo's seem to have this steep pick angle.

I've barely touched the surface of this concept of "Angle to the Strings." I watched as many Youtube vids as I could take, and only see this as one of many techniques. It does seem that the earlier you go, the more he uses that.

I'd love to get opinions.
Peace
M

If y'all want to really geek out on pick technique, I recommend this page by Tuck Andress (of Tuck & Patti fame)...it is the most in-depth analysis of pick technique that I have ever seen.
http://www.tuckandpatti.com/pick-finger_tech.html

Actually his whole website, "Tuck's Corner", is really cool:

And if you've never heard of Tuck, check THIS out:

Regrading the thinner graphite pick comment, perhaps try a tortex jazz stubby or a Telefunken. The t-funks come in .75 an 1mm, maybe that would be better?

Yes, I know they're not *exactly* the same, but whose gonna know? :-)
