...Anyone?? I thought it might be cool to see what you guys came up with here.Theres no right answer of course so what do you think is similar in their tone, band, approach etc.?? Maybe narrow it down to the top 3 things where you find a connection of sorts??

Heres Larry Carlton, Greg Mathieson - Keys, John Peña - Bass, Jeff Porcaro - drums, Alex Acuña - Perc 1986.

Nice clip! I took a freshman English class with Jeff Porcaro's nephew (also a drummer).
1. Tone similarities - bright Fender-y tone, sometimes right at the edge of feedback (I thought I saw a Bag End cabinet in his rig too
2. Some of the tension building dissonance was similar
3. Restraint - neither of them are in a hurry to play a buhzillion notes.

Bonus - both kick-ass guitarists!

Give Garcia:Compliments a spin.
Larry is on that one.
I'm pretty sure Larry Carlton is playing the intro/rhythm-lick on "He Ain't Give You None", the lick that plays throughout the tune (kind of a chord slide up, followed by a chord hammer-on/off):

There is no way a major label would have ever allowed an album like this to be made. The licensing fees alone would have been astronomical. Let alone paying all those amazing musicians. I would be astounded to find out that album broke even, but more likely it lost a lot of money.

Thats awesome...I love the replies here and yes very true anout all of them. I also had no idea Larry played on that album thats sick!...its amazing what details you guys come up with sometimes. I was gonna say ..strat w/ gibson bridge and 24 fret necks for both in certain periods. I love Larry on a strat...The Dumble just sizzle and open up the single coil nicely and hurt a bit less than hit with the 335. They both use eq on the OD for lead tones to get that sizzle and focus just right. The both definitely utilize...subtlety , tension and release better than anyone i can think of w the guitar. They both go from real mellow tunes to real rockin..but thats pretty coommon. I just love the way they did it and two very recognizable tones both based on the BF Fender twin reverb. And yep thats probably a Bag End cab loaded w EV 12L's. Big magnet, large voice coil speaker with lots of power.
