There are some nice looking and reasonably priced pine speaker cabs out there. From searching "pine" here I understand some have tried pine cabs and liked them. From what I've read I'm thinking that pine might take some of the edge off JBLs (which may be good or bad). I don't know if the Dead's birch plywood was there for a specific tone, or to take years of touring abuse. If I were humping cabs all over the world I'm pretty sure that's what I would use. But for mostly at-home playing, I have the luxury of options. And I've read that JBLs can bloom a bit at higher volumes, but for practice levels is it possible that you could use a softer wood to help take the edge off?

Has anyone A/B'd the same speakers in similar plywood and pine cabinets?

Pine cabs have a resonance to them that make them work exceptionally well with amps like reverb-less tweed Fenders.

For my own music, I prefer BF circuits with reverb and efficient cabs w/a fast transient response to the notes so void-free Birch ply works for me.

OK, so here's my take of a pine Jerry cab. Got it from Tim at TRM cabs:

Added 8 coats of tung oil finish, handles, feet, and a 10" and 12" K, left most of the back open:

My first experience with JBLs- what a difference! Currently running from my Mesa Lonestar- chimy and "musical". Weighs in at 40 pounds. If I was doing over I would get his 2x10 cab, still plenty of room for 12s.

Great cabs from Tim- excellent craftsmanship, bulletproof packing for shipping. Highly recommended.
