Some Stuff

Some thoughts on this one.

Intro notes: (somewhat different than in the archive)

E-------------------------------------------
B-------------------------------------------
G-----7-9b>11---9p7-9-7---------------------
D-9-9-------------------9-------------------
A-------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------

-----------------------A---E---B
E--------------7----------------------------
B-------------------------------------------
G------7-9b>11---9-9-7----------------------
D--9-9--------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------

Bobby's verse riff:

---B---------B7-----E--B
E--------7--------------------------------------
B--------7---10-10--9---------------------------
G------------11-11--9---7h8---------------------
D--9-9-------9--9---9--9---9--------------------
A--9-9------------------------------------------
E------7----------------------------------------

He'd vary the strumming some what by giving three strums to both the B7 and E shapes before going back to the B. (of course among various other nuances)

Jam progression:

Most of the jam is improv over B but for a while they went to this progression after the B jam.

B--A--D--F# and eventually holding the F# before going back to the verse riff.

Great tune.

Adding on/alternatively:

Bobby--------B--------------A#m/Abm-----------------
E---------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------
G-----7-9/11---11-9p7-------------------------------
D-7/9-----------------9-----------------------------
A---------------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------

Bobby-------------Abm/F#m-----------------A--E--B---
E-----------------------------------------5--7--7---
B------------10---------------------------5--9--7---
G-----7-9/11--------------11-9p7----------6--9--8---
D-7/9-------------------------------------7--9--9---
A-----------------------------------------7--7--9---
E-----------------------------------------5-----7---

* Sorry if my notation is wrong. I use "/" as slide.

Another Bobbyism, add the notes in () below as you juggle onto the B7 as noted by BillBill above.

E--7---(11)-------
B--7---(11)-------
G--8---(11)-(10)--
D--9--------------
A--9--------------
E--7--------------

The 'JAM' => hangs on B, then to: E D G B A
Think of it like a waltz:
E (6 count)
D (6 count)
G (6 count)
B (3 count)
A (3 count)

Then coming out of it in hold onto the B, build it up, then drop it into the main riffs.

Mind you, this used to get played alot and tons of different ways. The style I submitted here is what is on a show I favor.

Hey strumminsix,
I'm curious about your end progression. Which version is it from?

Billbbill, someone asked me the same question the other day and regretfully I was just listening to a show, grabbed my acoustic, learned it, wrote it down, and forgot to record the show date.

It was a late 60s style. Here is the best description:

Normal noodling>spaces out>comes back into struction>begins that waltz-like jam>builds up into a big orgasmic style jam then BAM! back into the main riff.

Wait, maybe it's from the All Access VHS tape.

I honestly don't know but it sure is fun.

Billbill, I was in the wrong key...

B (6 count)
A (6 count)
D (6 count)
F# (3 count)
E (3 count)

Then cycles back from the E to the F# to build up the end.

Yay for old threads. This puppy was worth reviving though, thanks for the ideas man.

I've since realized I slightly morphed bob and jers verse parts to one part, I think.

---B---------B7-----E--B
E--------7--------------------------------------
B--------7---10-10--9---------------------------
G------------11-11--9---7h8---------------------
D--9-9-------9--9---9--9---9--------------------
A--9-9------------------------------------------
E------7----------------------------------------

I think the B chord shot I have (the bold 7's) is actually jerry and I think he hit it one position up and would follow it with a little riff. Something like this.

---B
e--11-
b--12-
g--11-
d---------9-
a-----9h11---11--

Another on my rather lengthy vid 'to do' list.

NICE!!
Always a treat to be able learn something as cool as that to start the day. Much thanks for reposting it.

I don't hear the E after the F# that strummin6 posted. Gives it that Midnight Hour intro feel. Maybe they used it at times to end or transistion the tune??

This B7 is used often as part of the B E7 E B main riff

E|--11b--
B|--10b--
G|--11b--
D|------
A|------
E|------

What up my fellow blue shirt fan?

E|--11b--
B|--10b--
G|--11b--

This be a B7, no? This is what I have above though I don't voice the high E string.

They didn't always use it. But yes, they used it when the jam really picked up at the end and before they went back into the main riff.

What scales do you use? The Blues scale?

Also I forgot to ask before but what fret do you play at? Something like this:
Code: Select all
B (6 count) (7th fret)
A (6 count) (5th fret)
D (6 count) (? fret)
F# (3 count) ( 2nd fret)
E (3 count) (7th [?] fret)

Bweird: all over really. Not sure what sounds best until I have a bass player behind me!

BillBill: Grateful Dead - 1971-08-07 - DP Vol 35 - 09 - Hard to Handle

Incidently, this version does the rock vs waltz: B A D F# then holds the F# to build up
