My take on this has evolved since my first shot at this was posted by so long ago. For one I'm straight up finger picking now and I think I've grabbed some nuance that I'd been missing. Better view, at least my picking hand is now in the shot. Pretty straight forward except for a few things. Any questions lemme know...

FYI - use the speed adjustment setting in the video 'settings' to slow it down even more if that helps - that option appears to not be available here but is if you watch on YT

Thanks! Will have to work on that. Seems like every time I try to fingerpick onstage it just sounds weak to me and I end up just faking it w/ a pick.

Thanks! I've been trying to get away from the flat/finger pick combo - the response is just not uniform. So along with the finger picking I'm working on the old 'stow the pick' trick. Getting there.

gonna try and put up some tab too - especially for the E portion. Here's over the Bm. I noticed a quick little 'A' note 'bump' at the very end of the Bm measure essentially leading to the A chord. So that's what the last note is.

Over the A (the beginning of the E may actually be the end of the A measure - maybe the first note)
Code: Select all

The tricky part here is the hammer and simultaneous open D - in vids you can see jerry pretty much using that alternating thumb throughout except over the walkup and the first A that rings before the 2nd half of the phrase. Took me a while and a bunch of versions until I actually heard that open D - so in effect you have BOTH the open D and hammer on the G# resolving to the E at the same time.

Code: Select all
   E A E (2nd time)
G|-0h1----------1----2---- |-0h1------1--2---0h1--------

Nice work Bill, and thanks for sharing!

Is there a specific version that the open D sticks out more, I don't hear it?

Thanks Waldo!

So here's where you can hear it at 8:39 and slow it down to .5 speed - it's the second half of the phrase though I'm pretty sure it's throughout. You slow it down under settings bottom right but you may have to go to YT for that and it may or may not be there depending on your device etc. Working for me on PC w/Win7.

I think he purposely doesn't 'snap' it so as for it to remain a subordinate harmony to the G-G#-E. There's another version where you can see it but not hear it! lol Lemme look for it. Also The 'A' note on the G string I've got at about 3/4 of the way through the portion over the A isn't here - but I've heard it on other versions.

here's the one with the 'look' I think - using the thumb alternating - seems to me it hits on the hammer (G#) right between the index finger hitting the G and then E. Along with hearing that D on the other version in that space that's what I think is going on. Again slowing it down helps. It is possible he's not hammering and hitting the G# w/ his thumb - Though I do hear it on that Radio City version above. Possible he did it both ways!

Even more clear here - and I think this is the one where i got the 'A' from that's noted above. May need to DL to slow it down or copy and paste the URL in your player - incidentally my first show! :) ... dd1t02.mp3
